The notorious murder mystery of Gregg Smart is covered in the latest episode of ABC’s 20/20 Broken Vows, at 9 pm EST. When Smart's body was discovered at his residence in Derry, New Hampshire, in 1990, it sent waves of shock and grief across the entire community. He was reportedly found with a bullet wound in the back of his head.

The episode was originally aired in 2020 and has been re-broadcast to revisit the case of Pamela Smart. For the unversed, she was sentenced to life in prison and accused of being an accomplice in her husband's murder in 1990.

Who is Gregg Smart and what happened to him?

Greggory William “Gregg” Smart was a bright young man with a promising future ahead of him. Born on September 4, 1965, to William Jay “Bill” Smart and Judith Ann Belliveau Smart, in Nashua, New Hampshire, Gregory grew up with two brothers. He went to Londonderry High School in 1983, before going to Metropolitan Creer Success School in Warwick, Rhode Island.

When Gregg Smart met Pamela, he fell in love and moved to Florida to be with her. As shown in the crime series, they got married and made their relationship official on May 7, 1989, and moved back to New Hampshire. The new couple purchased a condominium in an affluent neighborhood in Derry and led a happily married life.

Gregg Smart worked as an insurance agent, and Pamela Smart served as the director of media services at Winnacunnet High School. Sadly, their life was torn apart on May 1, 1990. On that day, Pamela came home to a haunting crime scene. She found her husband’s dead body on the floor, as ABC News reported.

When the authorities arrived at the crime scene, they discovered that the house was ransacked and the cause of Gregg’s death seemed to be a bullet wound on the back of his head.

Who killed Gregg Smart?

When the investigators started interviewing Gregg's family and friends, they discovered that Gregg and Pamela's marriage was not as happy as it looked and there were infidelity issues between them.

It wasn't until June 10, 1990, when a man brought a .38 caliber pistol he owned to the police station, claiming that it could be the murder weapon used to kill Gregg Smart, that the case started moving forward.

It turned out to be the actual murder weapon and it led to a teenager named Ralph Welch, who pointed the police to William “Billy” Flynn, Patrick “Pete” Allen Randall, and Vance Lattime Jr. at Winnacunnet High School, where Pamela worked. It came to light the next day that they were hired by Pamela to kill her husband for $200. The accused were taken into custody immediately.

Pamela and 15-year-old Billy were reportedly having an affair and they had conspired to kill Gregg Smart without losing any of the possessions over a divorce settlement. It was Pamela who put Billy up to the murder and Vance, Billy, and Pete orchestrated the entire incident.

On August 1, 1990, she was arrested inside the school premises and charged with accomplice to first-degree murder. Billy and his accomplices took a plea deal to get themselves lighter sentences in exchange for their testimony in Pamela’s trial.

On March 22, 1991, Pamela Smart was found guilty by the jury after a 14-day trial and was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, being an accomplice to first-degree murder, and witness tampering. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Billy, Pete, and Vance also received life sentences with eligibility for parole after serving considerable time in prison.

Gregg Smart's murder case is explored in detail with interviews from investigators family and friends in the episode Broken Vows of ABC's 20/20. In the episode, ABC News’ Juju Chang revisits the case and shares the latest developments on it.
