What happened to Jill Halliburton Su?
Jill Halliburton Su was a 59-year-old resident of Florida, wife to Dr. Nan-Yao Su, and mother to Amanda and Justin. She started doing charity after the children grew up and also read for the visually impaired. Su was loved by all and being the grand-niece of the founder of the Haliburton oil empire, the family was financially very stable.
On the day she was murdered, she was alone in the house. Her husband Dr. Nan-Yao Su initially spotted an intruder via the CCTV cameras which were recently installed in the house after which he called their son Justin and asked him to check up on her. The intruder was masked and their face wasn't visible as revealed by Mr Su to the police while interrogating.
When her son Justin returned home, he found Su in the bathtub, her hands and feet were bound, there were wounds all over her body, and she was not responding. He freaked out at the sight of all the gore around him and called 911. Jill was stabbed 25 times, as reported by CBS.
There was a knife found at the crime scene and one outside the house entrance, which was suspected to be the murder weapon. A green belt and an alarm box were also recovered from the scene.
While there were forced signs of a break-in and signs of burglary with broken glass everywhere and jewelry boxes scattered, nothing was missing from the house.
Who killed Jill Halliburton Su?
As reported by NBC 6, Justin and his father were initially taken in for questioning after the murder of Jill Halliburton Su. Dr. Nan-Yao Su, her husband, talked to the police about how there was a masked intruder who tried to enter the house on the day of the murder. Dr. Nan-Yao Su also tried to blacklist his son Justin by revealing his unhealthy habits and not-so-bright past to the police, making him a suspect during the interrogation.
Both the knives that were found in the crime scene were owned by her son. The police also found out that Justin had a passion for collecting knives, which made him a prime suspect. The detectives therefore questioned Justin for long hours as they suspected him of killing his mother.
Justin's statements weren’t making sense as he first said he was in school at the time of the murder after which he said he was sleeping in his car at the time of the murder, contradicting himself.
He also told the officers that following his father’s phone call, he first entered his room after he entered the house. This made the detectives wonder why he would enter his room first when he returned to the house to check up on Su.
However, Justin didn’t admit to killing Jill Halliburton Su and emphasized how much he loved her and needed her, as seen in the police interrogation footage. After father and son were cleared of murder, the police arrested Dayonte Resiles after they found his DNA on one of the knives from the crime scene. His genetic footprint was also found on the green belt recovered from the crime scene and the shattered door of Su's residence.
Dayonte who had eight juvenile arrests previously, was blacklisted for burglary however he had not committed a murder before. Dayonte used to help others with his stolen wealth and was often praised by people.
In September 2014, Dayonte was arrested for the murder of Jill Halliburton Su and faced a potential death sentence. The public defender tried to get rid of the death sentence however Dayonte was kept in prison in the meantime.
Dayonte on July 15, 2015, before his pre-trial hearing, escaped the courtroom with the help of his pre-planned exit plan. However, the South Florida police later arrested him and he also surrendered without hesitation.
According to him, he tried to escape as he was held in prison because of a crime he never committed, which he found unfair. He also wanted to see his two-year-old newborn, who he hadn't seen to date.
In 2017, Dayonte was given a tapped cell phone, which he used to call his friends. He asked them to fake his alibi and save him for a crime that he had never committed. However, on March 18, 2022, Dayonte was sentenced to life by the prosecutors, who found him guilty of the murder of Jill Halliburton Su.
As reported by NBC 6, Dayonte before his arrest, didn’t admit to the crime and said -
"They can hook me up to a polygraph test at any given time, ask me any question they wish, and my answer will remain the same. I did not kill Mrs. Su and that's all I have to say. To my family, I love y'all, I don't want y'all, don't cry for me, no matter what I gotta go through, I'll get through it."
