John Pierre Jr was stabbed to death
As revealed in I Am a Killer on Netflix, 26-year-old John Pierre Jr, a Montana resident was stabbed to death on March 6, 2013. The incident happened when John was at a house party along with his friends and community. The killer stabbed him once in the chest with a knife, after an argument broke because of a historic tribal rivalry.
The autopsy report stated that John Pierre died because of damage to his pulmonary artery and aorta. There was substantial internal bleeding, although the stab wound did not look lethal from the outside.
Here is how Sheriff Donald Bell, who features in I Am a Killer, describes the crime scene:
"I could see a group of people around a male that was sitting on the ground here. That was John Pierre. I have known him for a long time. I have known the family a long time . And when I went up and talked to John, he did not respond back to me. I would say that he was already in a state of shock."
He continues:
"The small amount of blood that , uh, that was coming out of his shirt made me believe that he had a substantial bleed internally. I talked to him until...he went unconscious and we laid him back, checked for pulse, and then we started CPR.”
Who killed John Pierre Jr?
Police identified the individual responsible for John Pierre Jr's death as Makueeyapee Whitford. Whitford fled the scene in his truck in panic after the stabbing. The witnesses of this homicide gave the police a description of Whitford’s truck, after which it was located in front of a motel, a few kilometers away from the crime scene.
The authorities surrounded the motel and knocked at the door, after which Makueeyapee Whitford came out. Whitford denied being at the party initially. Then he recanted his statement and said that he was there at the party, however, he had no hand in the stabbing. Later that day, he was arrested.
Whitford went on trial in December 2014 for deliberate homicide and on December 22, 2014, after a long 6-day trial, he was found guilty of the murder of John Pierre Jr. He was sentenced to 60 years behind bars, with a minimum of 25 years before he becomes eligible for parole.
As shown in I Am a Killer, Makueeyapee Whitford still claims that he acted in self-defense and was a victim of a hate crime.
