Kay Wenal was murdered inside her own home as previously shown on 48 hours. According to the detectives, there were no signs of forced entry. The detectives have speculated that the killer came in through the front door and as Kay opened the door, the assassin tried to knock her down with a punch.

Kay must have been stunned, so she could have run to the kitchen to save herself or just hide. However, the assassin found her and slit her throat twice, to make sure she is dead. Later the killer must have escaped via the back door into the woods.

There were no fingerprints or footprints found at the crime scene which made it hard for the detectives to solve this case. There was blood splattered on the wall and the floor, which later was tested and matched with Kay’s DNA, as shown on 48 hours.

The Gwinnett County Police eventually started their investigation and had Kay’s husband Hal Wenal on the suspect list. However, he had a strong alibi. Hal Wenal even agreed to do an interview with the police regarding the murder and cooperated at every step of the investigation. Later, he even hired a private detective named Ned Timmons, after Kay’s killer was not found for months.

According to Hal and as revealed on 48 hours, Kay’s killer could have been her third husband Jeff Gilbert. However, the police didn’t find him guilty on further investigation.

Kay’s best friend Karen was also on the list of suspects however she was also cleared from the list after the detectives confirmed with her alibi. Karen however declined the police interview and denied any involvement in this murder.

According to detectives and also shown on 48 hours previously, the killer wasn’t hired. He was someone who knew his way around the house, seeing how clearly the murder was done. The detectives on the show speculate the killer to be a man. The detectives suspected the killer to be right-hand dominated, who used a sharp knife or a scalpel to kill Kay. Pieces of latex gloves were found at the crime scene, with no DNA on them.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed by one of Kay’s neighbors that he had seen a mysterious man in the neighborhood before Kay died. A sketch of this mysterious man was also made with the help of forensics to aid the investigation however the killer remains unknown to date.

As revealed on 48 hours, Kay Wenal had a lot of affairs and she also married a lot. According to the detectives, Kay’s husband knew about her love triangles which he didn’t reveal even after her death. The investigators also found fetish wear in her closet.

A mysterious letter arrived three months after Kay’s death in July 2008 from Georgia. This well-crafted letter was a piece of art, which was written with the help of small magazine cutouts. The letter defamed Kay and it looked like it was written by one of her lovers.

As shown on ID, Kay’s lover revealed via that letter how she was a gold digger and she had promised to leave her current husband and be with him (the person who wrote the letter), which she eventually did not, which made him kill her.

However, forensic experts presume that this letter is crafted by a woman, who could not be the real killer. This made the detectives think about how two people could be behind Kay’s murder.

To date, the killer hasn’t been found nor has there been a lead on this case. After Hal died in 2008 of a heart attack, the investigation stopped because it was hard to finance it. With the episode on Kay Wenal's murder reairing on CBS, the Gwinnett County Police hope that the views can give a lead and help find the real assassin.
