Lynette Dawson, a mother of two children, from Sydney, Australia disappeared in January of 1982. Although Lynette Dawson disappeared over four decades ago, her case continued to attract media attention and public interest over the years.

Christopher Dawson, Lynette's husband, was eventually arrested for the crime. He was a professional rugby player before becoming a teacher. Although Lynette's body was not found, Chris was convicted of murder and given 24 years behind bars in 2022 after several years of speculation, investigations, and public scrutiny.

World's Most Notorious Killers season 1 episode 4 titled, The Murder Down Under, is all about Lynette Dawson's disappearance and death. The episode will revolve around the investigation, the effects of a podcast, and finally, Chris Dawson's conviction. The episode is expected to air on December 23, 2024, on Oxygen.

Lynette Dawson's disappearance

Lynette Dawson, 33, disappeared from her home in Bayview, a Sydney suburb on January 8, 1982. According to Oxygen, for years Chris insisted that his wife simply walked out on her old life; he even said she may have run off to a cult. He also claimed he had contact with her periodically over the telephone, although Lynette would never call any of her other family members.

Authorities accepted Chris Dawson's account and closed the case in 1983, citing insufficient evidence to suspect foul play.

Within weeks of Lynette's disappearance, Chris had moved his teenage lover, JC, into the family home. The former student of Chris would later give evidence about the controlling and manipulative ways in which Chris treated her and others.

In 2018, attention to the case was again brought to light after The Teacher's Pet podcast investigated the disappearance of Lynette and brought forth new evidence. Australian authorities reopened the case in 2018 as suspicions towards Chris were raised, eventually leading to his arrest.

Evidence against Chris Dawson

Although there was no physical evidence, circumstantial evidence served as the basis of Chris Dawson's conviction. The following details were pivotal:

Witness testimony: According to Oxygen, many witnesses came forth in the following years. Among them were Lynette's friends, neighbors, and family members who testified that Lynette had been visibly distressed in the months before her disappearance. Some described Chris as controlling and domineering.

Chris's behavior: Joanne Curtis, also known as JC, was a teenager (16) and a student of Chris Dawson at the time when they started dating in 1980. During the trial, she testified that just a few days after Lynette disappeared, Chris brought her to the family home, expecting her to play the roles of wife and mother overnight. JC spoke at the court hearings and narrated her life experiences and what happened within the household immediately after Lynette's disappearance.

Inconsistent statements: Chris's stories about how Lynette left him were contradictory. He said she called him several times after leaving, but there was no proof to that effect.

Financial motive: Prosecutors presented an argument that Chris stood to gain financially and socially with Lynette out of the picture. This was testified by Chris dating JC immediately after Lynette's disappearance.

The investigation and trial

The disappearance of Lynette Dawson has been investigated over several decades. Early efforts were superficial, with the police classifying her as a runaway. Renewed attention in 2018 saw the interviews of new witnesses and the reopening of the case.

Chris Dawson was arrested in December 2018 and accused of murdering Lynette. The trial started in 2022, during which the case was handled without a jury to reduce bias in media coverage. Justice Ian Harrison delivered the guilty verdict.

Justice Harrison, in his judgment, said Chris probably murdered Lynette to get her out of the way of his relationship with JC. He sentenced Chris Dawson to 24 years in prison, with chances of parole after 18 years.

Mass media coverage, which included the podcast The Teacher's Pet, greatly increased attention given to the case. The family of Lynette continues advocating for justice so that the story remains alive in people's minds.
