The story of Maria Munoz will be featured in the season premiere of Married to Evil season 2 on Investigation Discovery. The episode titled A Deadly Dose airs on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

The show dives into dark stories of betrayal within marriages and features real-life cases where one partner's malevolent actions lead to catastrophic outcomes. The first episode sheds light on Maria Munoz’s story and explores the complications of her marriage which is the affair that tore it apart and the fatal conclusion that ensued as she considered divorce.

Maria Munoz who was a 31-year-old mother and former nurse from Puerto Rico met her tragic end in Laredo, Texas after enduring an unstable marriage. Married to Joel Pellot who was a nurse anesthetist, their relationship deteriorated over the years marked by infidelity and emotional strife. Pellot engaged in an affair with a coworker named Janet Arredondo which lasted for two years. Despite attempts to salvage their marriage, the situation escalated in September 2020.

On the night of her death Maria and Pellot had planned to discuss their relationship. But the following morning Pellot reported to 911 that Maria might have overdosed on prescription pills. Despite his claims, subsequent investigations revealed no pill residue in Maria's stomach.

Maria Munoz tragically lost her life in Laredo, Texas under suspicious circumstances that initially appeared to be a suicide. Maria was a stay-at-home mother previously trained as a nurse in Puerto Rico and had been living with her husband Joel Pellot and their two young sons. As mentioned earlier, Joel was a nurse anesthetist who was implicated in her death which on first examination seemed to be caused by an overdose.

The complications of their marriage began to surface with revelations of Joel's ongoing affair with a coworker named Janet Arredondo which had persisted for two years. The affair had deeply strained the couple’s relationship which led Maria to contemplate divorce. The contemplation turned into action the night before her death when she and Joel had planned a serious conversation about their future together.

On September 22, 2020, the morning after their planned discussion Joel called 911 claiming Maria Munoz was unresponsive due to possibly overdosing on prescription pills. First responders arrived at their home but were unable to revive her. Initially, the situation was treated as a potential accidental overdose or suicide particularly when Joel suggested she had been depressed and possibly took clonazepam which is a medication prescribed to him and not her.

But inconsistencies quickly emerged and responding officers found Joel's behavior and the physical evidence suspicious. A thorough search of the scene revealed medical supplies including syringes and a needle catheter which is typically not found in a non-medical setting.

Additionally, an autopsy revealed no trace of clonazepam in Maria's system. Instead, it showed a mix of powerful surgical drugs like morphine, Demerol, Versed, Propofol, ketamine, lidocaine, and Narcan which are all substances linked to anesthesia and not typically accessible outside of medical facilities.

Further investigation uncovered a small puncture mark on Maria Munoz’s arm which suggested an injection rather than pill ingestion. So this particular detail combined with the types of drugs found in her system and Joel's access to such substances shifted the focus of the inquiry from suicide to homicide.

Joel's extramarital relationship became a central element of the case because it was revealed that he had been living with Janet Arredondo while still married to Maria Munoz. The betrayal had escalated to a point where Maria confronted him after discovering Joel's car outside Janet's home, which only led to more conflict and ultimately her planning to hire a divorce lawyer.

The case against Joel was built on a combination of physical evidence, medical analysis, and personal testimonies. Maria's own writings and secret recordings also played a crucial role which revealed her state of mind and the dynamics of her failing marriage.

Ultimately the evidence presented at trial led to Joel’s conviction for murder which concluded that he had intentionally administered a fatal combination of drugs to Maria Munoz to prevent her from pursuing a divorce. Joel Pellot was sentenced to life in prison along with 10 years for tampering with evidence charge. Additionally, he was fined $10,000 for both charges.
