The latest episode of The Real CSI: Miami, Death of a Hurricane, which is airing on CBS on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 10 p.m., examines the tragic deaths of 22-year-old linebacker Marlin Barnes and his friend, Timwanika Lumpkins, who were murdered in Barnes’ on-campus apartment at the University of Miami.
Who was Marlin Barnes and what happened to him?
Marlin Barnes was a Florida native who dreamed of playing football at the University of Miami. Barnes managed to turn his dreams into reality and began his football career at the University of Miami. Weeks later, after being voted the most improved player, on the night of April 12, 1996, Barnes was invited to a party at Club Salvation, where he went with his close friend Timwanika Lumpkins.
The next morning, Barnes’ roommate, Earl Little, arrived home to find Barnes and Lumpkins viciously beaten at their place. Marlin Barnes, 22, was declared dead at the scene, and Timwanika Lumpkins, also 22, died on the way to the hospital.
The then-Miami-Dade assistant state's attorney, Flora Seff, described the killings as "brutal" and commented that an unused shotgun shell was found at the scene. During the investigation, Lumpkins’ boyfriend, Labrant Dennis, was called for an investigation, where he claimed innocence, saying that he loved Lumpkins and they had a child together.
It was later known that the week before Lumpkins moved out, the couple got into a fight because she had come home late, and Dennis was suspicious about her relationship with Barnes.
Dennis told police that he was at the same club as Barnes and Lumpkins, but he did not see them and went home later. However, investigators found a strong witness in the area, a woman who worked at the nearby gas station, who told the police that a man had been sitting in a gray Nissan in the gas station parking lot that night.
The car was not a match with Denis' car, but the police eventually learned that the Nissan at the gas station was registered to Watesha Wallace, a girlfriend of Labrant Dennis. Following these findings, Dennis' co-worker, Joseph Stewart, called a police tip line to say that he lent Dennis his mother's shotgun, which he had left in the bushes surrounding his mother's house.
When the bag that was left in the bushes was investigated, it was found that there was a knife and clothing, as well as the shotgun, which was damaged and missing the trigger guard. The trigger guard was found outside Barnes' home after initial investigations.
On April 30, Labrant Dennis was arrested for the murders of Timwanika Lumpkins and Marlin Barnes and was convicted of all charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. He was sentenced to death in 1999.
