Rebellion has been a major plot point in the second season of Apple TV+'s hit dystopian sci-fi series Silo. The season brought some of the biggest conflicts the show has ever seen, including the shocking and sudden death of one of its main characters, The Judge, Mary Meadows.
Although she was the head of the Judicial Department, Meadows was much of Bernard's puppet in season 1, but the show's second season saw her take a more active role in Silo 18.
However, she also met her death in season 2. Judge Mary Meadows died after Bernard Holland, the Mayor, poisoned her with mushrooms. What he did to Meadows was one of the Mayor's dastardly deceptions, all in the name of staying true to the Pact and the Order. For him, Meadows' death would help maintain the status quo and constrain dissent.

The Mayor killed Judge Mary Meadows in Silo season 2
Mary Meadows is the Judge, the official leader of the Judicial Department, but it was all on paper only. The first season of the show revealed that Judge Meadows didn't hold the power or the authority and that it was Bernard who held all the cards.
However, in the second season, Judge Meadows had a more active presence in the series. She helped Bernard regain control over the citizens by showing a united front, as seen in Silo season 2 episode 2 and became the Mayor's shadow, sometimes his sounding board and confidante, although unofficially.
Throughout the first episodes of season 2, Meadows' obsession with going outside has been a huge part of her story. She mostly humored Bernard so he would give her the protective suit she had been asking for because she wanted to go outside. However, she faced Bernard's betrayal in Silo season 2 episode 4 during the dinner Bernard had invited her to.
Bernard told Mary Meadows that the suit she had been asking for was ready and at his apartment. They had dinner first, something that Bernard cooked himself. During dinner, however, Meadows started having trouble breathing because Bernard had poisoned her.
She knew it then, and Bernard confessed that he did not poison the wine because he wasn't sure she would drink it. He admitted that the poison was on the mushrooms.
The horrified Judge Mary Meadows pushed her plate away, but by then, it was already too late as the poison had already flowed through her system. She died not long after.

What did Bernard gift Judge Meadows before she died?
While he couldn't fulfill Mary Meadows' wishes of going outside and seeing the world, Bernard gave her a parting gift after he poisoned her and just before she passed away. Bernard had her put on a virtual reality headset, transporting the Judge to Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica in 2018.
He gave her the experience of seeing the natural beauty of the forest and introduced her to living creatures that she had never seen in real life, including a red-eyed tree frog and a capuchin monkey.
The display of the beautiful outside world was the last Meadows saw before she succumbed to her death. However, the glimpse of the beautiful world in the past also brought Meadows a layer of tragedy, which was evident in her parting words:
"What did they do, Bernard? How did they lose this world?"
