Melissa Witt was a peppy 19-year-old college student from Fort Smith, Arkansas who went missing on December 1, 1994. Melissa came from a very close-knit community in Fort Smith, Arkansas and her disappearance was a major shock not only to her parents but also to the community as a whole.
Melissa Witt was at a bowling alley called Bowling World on December 1, 1994. She went to visit her mother who was participating in a bowling event. As per a narration by a retired Fort Smith police officer to TVH11, Melissa was abducted at the parking lot of the bowling alley when she briefly came out. The abduction was confirmed by the police since they discovered traces of Melissa's blood in the parking lot along with a set of her car keys.
Her disappearance was followed by a six-week-long community-wide search effort. In a shocking turn of events, Melissa's body was discovered on January 13, 1995, at the Ozark National Forest. Melissa was murdered through strangulation by her killer, as evidenced by the forensic team. She was found naked and robbed of her jewelry with her head placed on a headstone-shaped rock.
The case remains unsolved, three decades following the incident with breakthroughs only being discovered recently by different groups of investigators. A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, named LaDonna Humphrey dedicated almost a decade of her life to studying the case, and as per The U.S. Sun, she has come very close to discovering the killer, although she did not disclose the name so as not to disrupt the ongoing case.
