Hulu’s 8-episode miniseries Little Fires Everywhere premiered on the platform on March 18, 2020, and is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Celeste Ng. Part of its official synopsis reads:
“Little Fires Everywhere follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives.”
The series mostly revolves around the families of Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) and Mia Warren (Kerry Washington). However, a major subplot of the series concerns the fate of Mirabelle McCullough, aka May Ling.
At the beginning of the series, Mirabelle McCullough is shown as the McCulloughs’ one-year-old adopted child. However, it is revealed that she is the biological child of Bebe Chow, Mia’s co-worker at the restaurant who had abandoned the recently born May Ling at a fire station.
As Little Fires Everywhere progresses, a legal battle between the affluent McCulloughs and Bebe ensues over Mirabelle McCullough, aka May Ling. The McCulloughs win the case; however, in the final episode, Bebe is shown sneaking into their house and stealing back her baby.
Mirabelle McCullough, aka May Ling’s fate at the end of Little Fires Everywhere
In episode 3 of the series, a past incident involving Bebe Chow and her recently born baby, May Ling, is shown through a flashback. Bebe is extremely poor and cannot afford the necessities for her baby. So, she abandons her at a fire station, hoping a better life awaits her little child.
It so happens that May is found by Mark and Linda McCullough, a couple who have been trying to have a baby for a long time. They name the baby May Mirabelle McCullough.
Bebe is Mia’s co-worker and shares May’s story with her one day. Mia discovers her true identity when she attends the child’s first birthday. Mia gets to attend the ceremony because the McCulloughs and Richardsons are friends, and Mia is a domestic manager at the Richardsons’.
Mia informs Bebe of her discovery, and the latter comes rushing to the celebration and demands she be given her daughter back. Mia helps Bebe go to court with the case. A lengthy battle ensues in which the McCulloughs, thanks to their affluent financial condition, are allowed to keep the baby.
However, the subplot of Mirabelle McCullough, aka May Ling, in Little Fires Everywhere does not end here. In the last episode, Bebe creeps into the McCulloughs’ place and steals her baby.
Little Fires Everywhere: A brief recap
Mia Warren and her teenage daughter, Pearl, are new to Shaker Heights, Ohio. They soon get a place, thanks to Elena Richardson. Gradually, the families of these women become connected as Pearl and Elena’s four children go to the same school and frequent the same places.
However, the personal lives of the characters are far from peaceful. Tension, frustration, and outright animosity mar many relationships in Little Fires Everywhere. For instance, Elena and her youngest daughter, Izzy, do not get along.
As the series moves forward, painful incidents from the past of several characters are revealed, and their consequences on the present are explored. Set primarily during the 90s and showing some of the 80s in flashbacks, the series delves into such themes as racism, sexism, motherhood, and the life of the artist, among others.
