Ahead of the upcoming episode of The Real Murders of Atlanta, here is a breakdown of what happened to Nikki Whitehead and who did it.
Who is Nikki Whitehead and what happened to her?
Jarmecca Yvonne "Nikki" Whitehead, was a 34-year-old mother of 16-year-old identical twins Jasmiyah Kaneesha and Tasmiyah Janeesha Whitehead. Nikki was 19 when she had her daughters and they were primarily raised by their grandmother, Della Frazier.
Della revealed that Nikki wasn't a constant presence in Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah's lives. This led to a rift forming between the twins and their mother. When they were 13, Nikki decided to take custody of the twins, leading to the three clashing further. After the twins went to live with their mother, their conflicts escalated and police were also called to the residence. The twins had to undergo counseling and make juvenile court appearances.
Frazier got custody of the twins after this but in 2010, Nikki Whitehead regained their custody, and within a week, an unexpected tragedy struck the household. Authorities received a call from the Whitehead residence on January 13, 2010. At the home, they found Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah claiming that they found their mother unresponsive in the bathroom. Nikki Whitehead was beaten to death and stabbed multiple times.
When the investigation commenced, authorities were at a complete loss as they could not figure out any motive or killer.
Who killed Nikki Whitehead?
As authorities continued their investigation, they discovered Nikki was hit with a vase, beaten up, and stabbed with a kitchen knife. While the investigation progressed slowly in the beginning, detectives soon discovered clues that led them to the most unexpected suspects - Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah.
They found DNA evidence apart from a bite mark on Tasmiyah, that matched Nikki's teeth pattern. They also realized that there were inconsistencies in the twins' narrative of when they reached school. Detectives soon realized that the two 16-year-olds had potentially murdered their mom and tried to confuse the police.
When they were initially taken in, they pleaded not guilty, but four years later, they took a plea deal for a lesser charge and were sentenced to 30 years in prison. Jasmiyah is incarcerated at the Pulaski State Prison in Hawkinsville, Georgia, while Tasmiyah is incarcerated at Arrendale State Prison in Raoul, Georgia.
The upcoming episode of The Real Murders of Atlanta will cover this case in more. detail.
