What led to the death of Reginald Daye?
On April 3, 2011, Crystal Mangum found herself embroiled in a grave legal matter involving her then-boyfriend, Reginald Daye. During a heated argument in their shared apartment in Durham, Mangum stabbed Daye. He was promptly taken to Duke University Hospital for emergency medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries, including severe damage to his torso, ten days later on April 13, 2011.
Mangum was subsequently arrested and faced a second-degree murder charge. In her defense, Mangum alleged self-defense, asserting that Daye had been violent towards her, prompting her to use lethal force to protect herself.
However, during the trial, the prosecution presented evidence indicating that Daye was trying to leave the scene when he was stabbed, implying he was not the aggressor. In November 2013, after deliberation, a jury found Mangum guilty, and she was sentenced to 14 to 18 years in prison.
Following her conviction, Mangum pursued several avenues of appeal challenging the legitimacy of her conviction by questioning the inclusion of certain witness testimonies that she felt should have been excluded from the trial.
Her appeal efforts did not yield a reversal of the verdict, and the ongoing series of legal challenges kept Mangum in the limelight, showing the intricate and contentious nature of her cases, which intersect deeply with themes of race, gender, and justice.
