The horrifying murder of pre-teen Asuna Banterra at the hands of her adoptive parents is the subject of the new Netflix documentary The Asunta Case. While the incident took place in Spain in the year 2013, the culprits Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra were imprisoned after a series of investigations despite denying all allegations regarding the same.

Rosario Porto was reported to have a fractured marriage, but the repercussions of the same had taken not only a toll on her but also on her daughter. She was imprisoned and later took her life.

The Asunta Case question as why a mother would kill her daughter

The Asunta Case poses a question from the very first episode, by asking why a mother would kill her daughter. While the ending is open to interpretation, judges did delve into several theories regarding the events leading up to the pre-teen's death. The series showed how the jury was listening to Asunta's pill problem.

The authorities speculated that Alfonso Basterra and Rosaria Porto's marriage had become toxic, and the aftermath of the same had impacted Asunta. Her husband had allegedly caught her cheating which had led things to escalate. The jury was also made aware of the fact that Porto's psychological issues had caused her to become tired of Asunta and that Porto's own issues had become worse after her parents died.

Porto and Basterra were subjected to a 18-years imprisonment. During this span, Porto had refused to meet Basterra and The Asunta Case reported that she had committed suicide in 2020. However, Basterra is still in prison.

The Asunta Case puts forward two possibilities about Rosario Porto's involvement

According to The Asunta Case, Asunta was the adopted daughter of Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra. In September 2021, 12-year-old Asuna was reported to be missing by her parents, following which authorities located her body outside Santiago. Upon locating her body beside a country road, the police investigated the case further and found her parents guilty.

Additionally, Asunta was found with 27 ground-up pills in her system, and the authorities speculated that she had died because of asphyxiation. The series delves into the possible reasons as to the reason behind Asunta's untimely demise. The penultimate episode attempts to uncover the occurrences that led to the tragic incident.

Through a series of dramatizations, two possibilities are raised - that Rosario Porto had killed her adopted daughter by herself, or did it with her husband. The final scene delves into the trial scene which occurred two years after the incident. Both Rosario and Basterra were arrested. However, despite the official arrest, the drama itself does not take a stance as to what exactly happened.

This leaves the ending open for the audience to interpret. This is especially because neither parent admitted to any wrongdoing. Rosario Porto did not even explain why she had initially lied about having driven her daughter out of the city. However, CCTV footage did confirm the same.

The series is currently streaming on Netflix.
