Sal Shabazz was shot in the head and the torso
Reportedly, on April 7, 2021, Sal Shabazz's wife, Jacquie, and their four daughters were staying in a motel because of safety reasons. Sal Shabazz decided to stay back at home because he was under the influence of alcohol.
He was on a call with his wife at around 2:00 am that very night, during which Jacqueline heard a knock on Sal’s door, followed by multiple gunshots. In a state of panic, she disconnected the call and called 911 for help.
The officers arrived at the couple's home and found Sal Shabazz dead. Reportedly, he was shot in the head and torso, with a total of four gunshot wounds found on his body.
As evidence, the detectives found 4 empty bullet casings (.380) next to his body.
Who murdered Sal Shabazz?
During interrogations, Sal’s wife revealed to the officers that she believed that her co-worker Tashara Jackson, with whom she had a long ongoing workplace feud, killed him.
When the investigations began, the traffic surveillance camera footage showed Jackson moving toward Sal’s residence at the time of the crime. However, she was not alone. Her alleged lover and co-worker Jeremy Pettway was also found to be an active participant in this homicide. Phone records and geolocation also proved the two suspects were guilty. Additionally, there were text messages between the two suspects that showed them in a negative light.
The detectives also found the murder weapon, that belonged to Pettway, which he tried to get rid of by giving it to a friend of his named Malone, after killing Sal Shabazz. The casings found at the scene matched with Pettway’s gun.
Based on the circumstantial evidence, the detectives speculated that Pettway pulled the trigger and killed Sal Shabazz, while Jackson was a willing accomplice.
Pettway didn’t plead guilty to the crime. However, in 2022, he was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and other charges.
On the other hand, Jackson, who the jurors believed was an active participant and also had a motive to kill Sal because of the ongoing feud she had with his wife, was also found guilty of first-degree murder, along with conspiracy to murder in 2022.
