Sarah Scazzi, who lived in the small town of Avetrana in Italy, was only 15 years old when she disappeared from her hometown, sparking a massive search effort. But she was found dead at the bottom of a well, strangled to death. Scazzi's tragic and brutal murder shocked the nation and garnered a lot of attention from the media. Her story will be featured in the series - This is Not Hollywood.

The Disney Plus show retells the events related to this bizarre but true murder case and the dark family secrets surrounding the entire incident. After releasing on Disney Plus, This is Not Hollywood is now coming on Hulu tomorrow.

About Sarah Scazzi's mysterious disappearance and death

Sarah Scazzi left home on 26 August 2010 to go to her uncle's house, where she was meeting her cousin Sabrina, a 22-year-old beautician. The two had plans to spend the afternoon at the beach, but Sarah never arrived.

Her disappearance triggered a town-wide search where the whole community came together to help police scour the area. Sarah's body was discovered only 42 days after her disappearance at the bottom of a well. She was strangled, and her body was dumped there.

While investigations were going on, Sarah's uncle, Michele Misseri, claimed he found her cell phone under a pile of olive leaves. Misseri then made a shocking confession and admitted to killing Sarah in his garage. However, he retracted his statement later, saying that it was his daughter who committed the murder.

After years of court proceedings, the Italian Supreme Court (Cassation Court) delivered its final verdict in 2017. Sarah's aunt, Cosima Serrano, and her cousin, Sabrina Misseri, were sentenced to life in prison for Sarah's murder, and Michele Misseri was sentenced to eight years in prison for aiding the crime by concealing the body.

Michele Misseri confessed to the crime

Misseri was released from prison in February 2024 after completing his sentence. As soon as he was released, he made a statement to the press where he admitted that he killed Sarah Scazzi. According to L'Unione Sarda, Misseri's statement reads,

"It was me, I killed her, I should stay here. I lied when I accused my daughter. I have been confessed a thousand and a thousand times. I wrote many letters to Sabrina and Cosima asking for forgiveness, but I never received a response. I would like to go and visit them in prison, but I don't know if they will accept. I want to ask them for forgiveness by looking them in the eyes, explaining to them why I accused them. I accused my daughter unjustly, but I never accused my wife, nor did my brother Carmine and my nephew Cosimo. I didn't want to go out because it's not right, I'm the guilty one. This guilt makes me feel bad."

It came to light that shortly before her death, Sarah Scazzi had complained to Sabrina that she was being molested by Michele. Following a 15-hour police interrogation, Michele confessed to strangling Sarah, raping her, and throwing her body into a well just outside Avetrana.

A grief-stricken Concetta Serrano, who is Sarah's mother, was informed on live television of her daughter's murder and her brother-in-law Michele Misseri's confession to the crime.
