Sigrid Foles and José Segura were Anabel Segura, aged 22 business student, abducted and murdered in 1993. The kidnapping took place while she was jogging near her home in La Moraleja, Madrid, following which it became a nightmare for the family to go through a prolonged period.

The abductors made them believe over the next two years that Anabel was still alive and that they were demanding a ransom of 150 million pesetas. This case is explored in detail in Netflix's latest series 900 Days Without Anabel, a documentary about the family's turmoil during these days. 900 Days without Anabel was released on November 22, 2024.

Both Sigrid and José actively participated in the activities of searching for Anabel Segura's liberation and justice for her death. They survived this tragedy during their later years, living in reclusion, out of the public spotlight, until both died in 2016 and 2019, respectively.

Who were Sigrid Foles and José Segura?

Sigrid Foles was of German origin and met her husband, José Segura, in Spain when he was working as a director in the petrochemical sector. After marriage, the couple came and settled in Madrid. The couple had two daughters: Anabel born in 1971, and Alexandra (Sandra).

During the early 1990s, the Segura-Foles family moved to La Moraleja, an affluent neighborhood in Madrid. Anabel Segura was studying at ICADE and was an athlete with great potential. On April 12, 1993, while jogging activity resumed after she returned early from a family ski trip because she needed to prepare for her exams- she was abducted.

What did Anabel Segura's parents do during the kidnapping?

After the abduction of Anabel, Sigrid, and José did not hesitate for a moment. They contacted law enforcement, held press conferences, and offered rewards for information leading to her safe return. They also established the lawyer as a conduit for communication with the kidnappers, who demanded 150 million pesetas in exchange for their release of Anabel.

In total, between April 1993 and September 1993, they made 14 ransom calls, proclaiming that Anabel Segura was alive. One time they called and left on a tape a woman who sounded like Anabel and requested to come home. It was later discovered that it was Felisa Garcia, the wife of one of the kidnappers, Emilio Muñoz.

The family's hopes were dashed in 1995 when police found and arrested the kidnappers, determining that Anabel had been murdered within hours of her abduction.

What happened next after Anabel Segura's case was solved?

Once the details of Anabel's death became public, Sigrid and José publicly denounced the kidnappers. The kidnappers, Emilio Muñoz Guadix, Candido Ortiz Añón, and Felisa Garcia, were imprisoned.

In 2013 Emilio was pardoned but still, the family told no forgiveness to Emilio. Sigrid and José decided to vanish from public scrutiny after the trial. They stayed in Alcobendas, Spain, with most of the family still surviving: daughter Alexandra, son-in-law Fermin Barquin, and grandkids Ana and Alfonso.
