What happened in the Bever Family massacre?
On July 22, 2015, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, a brutal and tragic event unfolded at the Bever family home which was later known as the Bever Family massacre. It resulted in the deaths of five family members and left one member critically injured. The perpetrators were two siblings from the family itself, namely Robert Bever, who was aged 18, and Michael Bever, aged 16.
The evening's events began around 11:30 PM when a distress call was made to 9-1-1 by 12-year-old Daniel Bever who was one of the siblings. He reported that his brothers were attacking the family. Tragically during this call sounds of a struggle and screaming were heard before the call disconnected. Police traced the call to the Bever residence at 709 Magnolia Court and promptly dispatched officers.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found a horrifying scene. They encountered pools of blood on the porch and immediately forced entry into the house due to the sounds of someone calling for help. Inside they discovered Crystal Bever, who was 13 and bleeding from multiple stab wounds, but still alive. Her immediate rescue likely saved her life.
In total, the officers found six victims inside the home. David Bever who was aged 54 and April Bever, 45, the parents were found deceased with multiple stab wounds. David suffered at least 28 stab wounds while April had sustained over 48 wounds. Their children, Daniel, Christopher (7), and Victoria (5) were also found deceased each having suffered numerous stab wounds.
Crystal Bever was urgently transported to a hospital where she underwent surgery. She survived her critical injuries and later provided crucial information about the attack. The youngest family member, Autumn Bever, aged two, was found unharmed in the house and was also rescued unharmed.
The Bever brothers had equipped themselves with an array of weapons including knives, a hatchet, and protective gear that suggests premeditation and planning. Robert and Michael Bever were apprehended hours later in a wooded area near their home. They had attempted to escape but were located by police using K9 units.
Investigations of the Bever Family massacre revealed chilling details about the brothers’ motives and planning. Robert Bever claimed the attack was planned as a way to "free" themselves from what they described as oppressive family conditions. Moreover, they intended to initiate a killing spree beyond their family hoping to achieve infamy by surpassing previous notorious massacres in the United States.
The aftermath of the Bever Family massacre left the community and nation in shock. Both brothers were charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder. Robert Bever pleaded guilty receiving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole. Michael Bever was tried as an adult was also convicted and received life sentences with the possibility of parole reflecting his younger age and the alleged familial abuse they reported.
