How was Terrence Smith killed? Details explored
The episode, titled Choices, showcases the brutal murder of Terrence Smith within the walls of Rikers Island. In 1990, Terrence was serving time at the facility located between the Bronx and Queens in New York. Rikers was known to be notorious at the time and was plagued with internal issues such as violence and overcrowding.
Terrence was known to be a withdrawn and quiet man among all other inmates. To survive the harsh conditions, Terrence established a friendship with Kevin Saxon. Kevin had been incarcerated due to the 1989 shooting in the Lincoln Projects area of New York City.

Kevin Saxon was a known name among the drug circles of the city. Kevin was put in the confines of Rikers Island in 1989 following which he and Terrence became close friends. As inmates in challenging conditions, Kevin and Terrence formed an alliance to survive the harsh conditions.
The two friends fell out soon after as Smith was alerted by someone in the prison saying that Kevin was conspiring against him. While Kevin assured him that the information was not entirely true, Terrence took it to heart and distanced himself from Kevin. As the situation got heated up over time, Kevin and Terrence started arguing frequently.
On February 6, 1990, the arguments reached a point where Kevin and Terrence Smith got into a physical fight. During the altercation, Kevin Saxon brought out a homemade shank that he designed in the prison. He stabbed Terrence with the shank multiple times. While the former insisted that he did not allegedly intend to kill Terrence, the injuries were so serious that Terrence was in a critical condition.
According to the New York Times, Thomas M. Antenen, a Correction Department spokesman shared that Smith died 20 days after the incident. Kevin Saxon was charged with manslaughter for Terrence Smith’s death and weapons possession. He reportedly pleaded guilty to both charges and was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison.
A spokesman for the Bronx district attorney, Robert T. Johnson, confirmed that Kevin was released early in 1999. However, he became the center of a bigger investigation involving the Lincoln Crew. Kevin was the gang leader of the crew and he had killed Richard Gaines, an amateur boxer.
