American documentary series Chimp Crazy directed by Eric Goode premiered on HBO on August 18, 2024. The tell-all series delves into the story of Tonia Haddix, an animal broker, and her relationship with a chimpanzee named Tonka. It provides an in-depth look at Haddix's relentless efforts to prevent the intervention of authorities and animal conservationists in Tonka's case.
However, despite her best efforts, Haddix had failed to keep Tonka away from these people. As of writing this article, Tonka is placed under the custody of Save the Chimps, a privately funded chimpanzee refuge in Fort Pierce, Florida, which specializes in providing chimpanzees with a comfortable life with minimal human contact.
Where is Tonka, the main subject of Chimp Crazy now?
HBO's documentary series Chimp Crazy covers the legal battle involving animal enthusiast Tonia Haddix, PETA, and other authorities over the custody of Tonka, a chimpanzee at the Missouri Primate Foundation. The series reveals that seven chimpanzees were previously under the care of Connie Cassey, during which PETA sued for poor living conditions.
When Tonia Haddix took over in 2019, the lawsuit was transferred to her. In 2020, Haddix agreed to transfer custody of four chimps to a sanctuary while keeping three under her care, provided she met certain conditions.
However, in 2020, the court found that Haddix did not fulfill the necessary requisites and ordered the transfer of all seven chimps to the sanctuary. When officials went to the Missouri Primate Foundation to collect the chimps, they discovered that Tonka was missing.
Haddix claimed that Tonka had died of natural causes before the officials arrived. She also said the same in court under oath. However, it was later revealed that Haddix had hidden Tonka in the basement of her house.
When this was discovered, Tonka was taken away and placed under the custody of Save the Chimps whose sanctuary is located in Fort Pierce, Florida.
