Episode 5 of Disclaimer season 1 was released on Apple TV+ on October 25, 2024. The latest episode of the psychological thriller miniseries shows Catherine having a difficult time, as more and more people end up learning about her past actions.
Catherine’s past has totally caught up with her. As of the latest episode, she has lost her family, her job, and her renown as an upright journalist. However, it is not just she who is affected by the consequences of her past actions. Nicholas, her son, has to pay a heavy price too.
Nicholas is also undergoing a tumultuous phase. In episode 5 of Disclaimer season 1, Stephen reveals his mother’s past to him. Unable to cope with the guilt that Jonathan died trying to save him, Nicholas spirals deeper and deeper into substance abuse.
Nicholas falls victim to catfishing in Disclaimer season 1
In episode 4, Stephen was seen trying to set up social media accounts for a teenager. In the latest episode, it is revealed that he has taken the help of a young man to create an Instagram account in the name of Jonathan, his late son. He uses this profile to send a ‘follow’ request to Nicholas.
Nicholas accepts the request, and soon the two start chatting. The unsuspecting Nicholas, of course, does not know that it is Stephen who is texting him, pretending to be Jonathan. Stephen plays the role of a casual teenager quite convincingly and as a result, Nicholas soon opens up to him.
After talking about random matters, Stephen shrewdly leads the conversation to the topic of The Perfect Stranger, the book that contains Catherine’s past in detail. Since Nicholas has read the book, they both share their thoughts on the female protagonist of the book.
In what is a potent instance of irony, in episode 5 of Disclaimer season 1, Nicholas tells Jonathan (Stephen, actually) that the mother in The Perfect Stranger is a selfish wh*re who is so consumed by her lust that she ignores her 4-year-old son who gets into danger due to her negligence.
Sensing that this is the right time, Stephen deals a heavy blow; he reveals to Nicholas that the woman in the book is, in fact, his own mother, and he himself is the small child Jonathan tried to save.
To make matters worse, Stephen sends Catherine’s compromising photos to Nicholas. Seeing her mother in various stages of undress and posing for the camera in a seductive manner, he is clearly perturbed.
Nicholas’ substance abuse takes a toll on him
Throughout episode 5 of Disclaimer season 1, Nicholas is seen struggling with drug addiction. He is seen going to a heroin-den, with his own kit. After learning the truth about his mother, and seeing the aforementioned photographs of her, he finds it difficult to cope with guilt and shame and anger.
All these emotions wash over him in waves, and Nicholas is seen crying, kicking the book, calling his mother names, and eventually, visiting the heroin-den once again in a disheveled state. There, he takes drugs once again.
As the episode nears its end, Catherine keeps calling Nicholas. The latter is still in the den, and has taken heroin recently. Before the scene cuts, he lies down on a dirty mattress and cocoons himself with his shivering arms and goes to sleep.
It is not certain by the end of episode 5 of Disclaimer season 1 whether Nicholas has had a drug overdose. However, what is clear is that he might psychologically never recover from whatever he has learned about his mother and himself from the fake Instagram user called Jonathan.
