What happens to Claire in Outlander season 7 episode 15?

As Claire Fraser said early in Outlander season 7 episode 15, "War is inevitable, and death is, too." The Revolutionary War was well and truly underway, and with Jamie being at the center of it as a new general, he ironically came out of the war unscathed. Claire, on the other hand, who kept to her side of the field hospital tending to wounded soldiers, wasn't as lucky.

After several impressive saves of ailing and dying soldiers, Claire's life was put on the line after she was shot in the stomach, and it quickly became apparent that the wound was serious and not something she could recover from on her own. She needed a highly skilled doctor to operate on her, but the Continental doctor had abandoned her at the most crucial part of her life.

Claire Fraser was shot in Outlander season 7 episode 15

While Jamie Fraser went to lead his battalion during the Battle of Monmouth, Claire remained at the field hospital to tend to the injured soldiers. It all played out in Outlander season 7 episode 15, Written in My Own Heart's Blood. By the end of the episode, it seemed that the war was coming to a close, with the British soldiers retreating. However, they were passing through the church hospital where Claire was, which alarmed Jamie.

With some of his soldiers, Jamie went to the field hospital, but shortly after, there was some commotion between the Continental armies at the hospital and the retreating British soldiers. Claire was caught in the crossfire, and she wound up shot in the abdomen, causing her to fall down to the ground and bleed out in front of her husband.

Jamie was shocked but determined to save Claire, so he carried her into the church hospital. However, the Continental doctor, Dr. Leahy, gave Jamie some grave news. The bullet had penetrated too deeply into Claire's abdomen, and there was nothing he could do for her. He left then to go to the main camp to save other soldiers while Jamie was left yelling expletives at his back.

Losing almost all hope of saving his beloved Sassenach, Jamie had confessed his love to Claire while promising her that "the stars will not burn out, and nor will we." And, despite the imminent death, it didn't stop Claire from orchestrating her own care. She diagnosed what could be happening to her body and panted that she needed Denzell's help, so Jamie sent one of his soldiers to get the doctor.

What happens to Claire next in Outlander season 7?

Soon enough, in Outlander season 7 episode 15, Dr. Denzell Hunter arrives at the church hospital with Rachel. Claire immediately gave him notes as he prepared to operate on her. One of the turning points in this scene was the Roquefort cheese Rachel brought from Marquis de Lafayette, in which Claire said that the mold in the cheese could be used to make penicillin to prevent any potential infection after the surgery.

There was nothing else to do but the surgery, so Denzell doses Claire with laudanum before promising to do his best. Meanwhile, Jamie remained by his wife's side, stroking her hair and quietly asking her not to leave him. Claire replied in a haze that she wouldn't. Once Claire was out and ready for the operation, Denzell turned to Jamie and told him to pray before the episode faded to black.

With Claire's life hanging in a balance at the end of Outlander season 7 episode 15, her fate will be the main thing audiences will be waiting to find out when the Outlander season 7 finale arrives. Her survival now lies in Denzell's hands and the Roquefort cheese that Rachel brought.
