Outlander season 7 introduced one of the most tragic characters from one of Diana Gabaldon's books in the 12th episode. Jane Pocock, played by Silvia Presente, will leave a lasting impact on the show's main characters, Jamie and Claire Fraser and William Ransom.
Jane's introduction to the series started with William learning about his parentage. He didn't handle the information particularly well and went to a brothel where he met a prostitute named Arabella. Although he was rude to her at first, it wasn't long before they shared an intimate connection.
However, the story didn't end there. William would later learn that Arabella's real name was Jane. While her arc is still developing in the series, those who have read the books know that Jane's story ends in a tragic death. Still, her character is important to William's development.

Jane Pocock's story in the Outlander series so far
Outlander, season 7, episode 12, was Jane and William Ransom's first meeting at the brothel Jane was working in. Initially, he knew her as Arabella and was rude to her. A bit of miscommunication caused a commotion that led to William being thrown out of the brothel. However, they were reunited when a pack of William's fellow British soldiers returned to the brothel.
One of William's fellows, Captain Harkness, considered Arabella his personal property and reserved her for the night. However, William won the bid, and instead of doing what Harkness was planning to do to the girl, he only wanted to give Arabella a good night's sleep. That's when the tension between them turned more comfortable and even romantic. Before the episode ended, William learned that Arabella's real name was Jane.
They had a surprise reunion again when Jane, with her little sister Fanny, went to William at the British camp in Outlander, season 7, episode 14. She wanted William's protection, but William was still unsure why she was there, so he got Jane a job as his laundress. However, he later learned that she had no worldly knowledge, including how to use money, because she had been working at the brothel since she was ten and never received any of her wages.
The next day, William learned the real story behind Jane and Fanny's surprise appearance at the camp. Jane confessed that she killed Captain Harkness because he offered double the going rate to have s*x with Fanny. When Madge sent Fanny to the room, Jane went with her in a ruse to ensure Fanny acted properly, but she had a knife in her gown.
She used the knife to kill Captain Harkness, and she and Fanny climbed out the window and rode on a farmer's wagon to get away. That's how they got to the British camp, hoping William could help them.

What happened to Jane Pocock in the books?
With two more episodes left in Outlander season 7, viewers haven't seen the last of Jane Pocock. Diana Gabaldon's book Written in My Own Heart's Blood outlined her tragic story. The book reveals that Jane and Fanny were orphans, and Jane was forced to work at the brothel to care for her little sister. However, Captain Harkness becomes a huge problem for the sisters when he targets Fanny.
The book and the show tell the same story: Jane accompanies Fanny to Harkness's room and kills him. However, the book details how William later helped Jane escape the murder. He asked Jamie for help, and they had Jane and Fanny settle in with Rachel and a group of Quakers.
However, someone recognizes Jane as Captain Harkness' killer, ending with her getting captured and sentenced to hang. While William and Jamie try to free her, they are ultimately too late.
Throughout her story in Outlander season 7, Jane wants the best for her sister. To spare Fanny from the trauma of seeing her big sister hanged, Jane commits suicide. Jane Pocock's story ends tragically, but like she always wanted, Fanny will have a better story. She would later get adopted by Jamie and Claire Fraser.
