Why was Thad Reynolds murdered?
Thad and Michelle Reynolds were high school sweethearts who tied the knot right after high school on August 15, 1987. The couple had four children but ended up going their separate ways in 1993, owing to marital problems from infidelity, per state records.
Thad and Michelle had been seeing other people during their break from one another but had decided to go back to being married after intervention by a professional.
Michelle and Thad Reynolds remarried in 1997 and exchanged their vows at the Hollywood Baptist Church where they had tied the knot for the first time in 1987 as well. The couple bought a plot of land and settled down next to Thad's parents. They became devoted to their routine in the Church as Thad became the deacon, and Michelle trained children for their performances at the Church.
However, the marriage saw problems again as Michelle reportedly grew tired of the devotion to the Church. Her opinions became problematic as Thad Reynolds wished to become a full-time minister at the Hollywood Baptist Church. In the meantime, Michelle grew closer to the youth minister, Richard Scott "Scotty" Harper, and the two began an illicit affair.
According to NBC News, Scotty and Paige Harper were a splitting image of Thad and Michelle in several ways. Besides, the two families were extremely close in their church duties as they went camping, barbecues, study groups, and on long drives together. Paige was allegedly jealous of Michelle as her husband spoke to Michelle over texts and emails frequently.
Michelle and Scott discovered they attended the same school, Pepperell High, wherein he was two years her junior. The two consummated their relationship in the backseat of Michelle's SUV at Scott's workplace in Floyd Medical Center. They reportedly continued their affair in inns and motels down the road of Hollywood Baptist Church.
The NBC News report stated that Scott was sure to leave Paige but Michelle knew that a second divorce with Thad would affect his opportunities to become minister at the Church. Thus, the two fantasized about having Thad killed while Michelle told Scott that he would have to outlive Thad to be with her.
According to Oxygen, Michelle gave Richard Scott Harper her husband's schedule before he was found stabbed to death 19 times at his work on July 5, 2004. Scott reportedly remarked during the killing:
"I want what you got."
The email correspondence between the two revealed that Michelle Reynolds and Scott Harper had been planning their attack. Additionally, the authorities found evidence of a hunter's knife sheath, a pair of glasses, and bloodied clothes to tie to Richard Scott Harper.
