In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery is about Laura Letts Becket's murder
Laura Letts Becket was a 50-year-old Canadian school teacher, who drowned in the Upper Arrow Lake on August 18, 2010. She had gone on a fishing trip to Shelter Bay site of the lake with her husband Peter Becket, a former Napier city councilor.
After her death, the authorities suspected potential murder for C$200,000 in insurance money. After a year of investigation, her 57-year-old husband was arrested. The case shook both Canada and New Zealand as Peter Beckett was a Kiwi local body politician accused of murder in Canada.
The case became more twisted when the prosecutors claimed that Peter was a greedy and vicious man who didn't just kill his wife but also tried to get the witnesses killed while he was in jail.
In the 2016 trial, Becket's cellmate claimed that the accused provided him with some names of whom he wanted to kill, which included Laura Becket's parents, cousin, lawyer, and police investigator.
According to a report by Hawkes Bay Today, a cellmate named Mr. Anderson told jurors about Peter Becket approaching him for killing the witnesses upon his release for a share of the insurance money and a new lifestyle in Costa Rica. Mr. Anderson then wrote about Becket's intentions to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police lead investigator.
After the trial, Peter Becket was given 25 years in jail for first-degree murder with no possibility of parole. However, in 2021 he was acquitted of the crime and was freed after spending 9 years in prison.
