The Edge of Sleep is an American thriller series that premiered on October 15, 2024, on Amazon Prime Video. The series follows Dave Torres, played by Mark Fischbach. It is originally inspired by the podcast of the same name hosted by YouTuber Markiplier.
Dave Torres, a night watchman accustomed to quiet, uneventful shifts, is shaken to his core when he finishes work one morning and makes a horrifying discovery. Overnight, every person who went to sleep has mysteriously died, leaving behind an eerie stillness and a world suddenly emptied of life.
The cause is unknown, and as panic sets in, Dave realizes he might be one of the last people left awake. His only hope of surviving and solving this terrifying mystery lies in confronting the troubling hallucinations that have plagued him since childhood.
What is the plot of The Edge of Sleep?
The Edge of Sleep revolves around the life of Dave Torres, a night watchman who wakes one morning to the eerie discovery that everyone who fell asleep the previous night has mysteriously died. Accompanied by Matteo, his colleague, and Linda, a nurse, Dave embarks on a quest to uncover the cause of this mass death while desperately trying to stay awake.
As they make their way through a world in disarray, they must work out how to avoid the same fate as everyone else and unravel the mystery behind this deadly phenomenon. The story deepens as they uncover connections to Dave's own past.
Haunted since childhood by strange hallucinations and recurring nightmares featuring a jarring figure of an elephant, he is left to find pieces of his fractured memory and dream-like visions while battling both time and their bodies' need for sleep.
This tense blend of psychological horror and science fiction portrays sleep as not only a basic human need but also the greatest threat. Dave, Matteo, and Linda race to stay alive, knowing that sleep will bring an inevitable death unless they can solve the mystery in time.

Where does The Edge of Sleep originate from?
The Edge of Sleep began as a thrilling science fiction podcast before being adapted into a novel by Jake Emmanuel, Willie Block, and Jason Gurley. The podcast had good production values and powerful voice acting. This turned listeners' heads toward it due to its intense plot. The plot revolves around the story of Dave, a night watchman, and his world, where people mysteriously die after falling asleep.
In the novel, Dave, alongside his co-worker Matteo and nurse Linda, has to find out what happened if he's to survive. Unfortunately, some of the speed and tension from the podcast is lost in translation. The novel first-person monologue reduces the immediacy of the first-person viewpoint in the podcast.
In fact, these childhood hallucinations of Dave, involving recurrent nightmares featuring an elephant figure, are the crux through which the mystery of the novel is solved. The novel revolves around the same theme but omits some of the darker moments, like Dave's violent past and the ominous human villain known as the Trespasser.
These changes contribute to the novel's general appeal but undermine the overall tension at the end. This kind of development into multiple viewpoints scatters depth over many pages but loses the immediacy and suspenseful feel of the podcast.
The book, although deviant compared to the podcast, will still appease the fan base of the podcasters as many core elements in the story are retained. However, it's worthwhile reading the podcast first since it is darker and more interesting to hear; the book will be a more subdued version of the same story.
