When Calls the Heart is a drama television series inspired by author Janette Oke's book of the same name. Showrunner Michael Landon Jr. developed it as a television feature, and the series began airing on the Hallmark Channel in the United States on January 11, 2014. Most recently, season 12 of the show has been released via the Hallmark Channel on January 5, 2024.

The show's main theme has been composed by John Sereda, which was released along with the show in 2014. Meanwhile, the official track made it to online streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music in 2019.

The theme music is an orchestral composition with no lyrics, and Sereda has mainly used instruments like the harp and piano to bring out the individual notes of the melody. Meanwhile, stringed instruments like violins, violas, and cellos provide an excellent base for the music, giving a calming effect.

When Calls the Heart explores the story of its main character Elizabeth Thatcher. Elizabeth is a young teacher who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal-mining town in Canada. Wanting to thrive in this 1910 coal town, Elizabeth has to adapt to the ways of the Canadian frontier and blend in with the local citizens.

In the first season of the show, Elizabeth charmed almost everyone in Coal Valley, except Police Constable Jack Thornton. He was assigned by Elizabeth's father to protect her, which he believed was a waste of resources, time, and his career. However, Elizabeth and Jack eventually fell for each other and got married. By the second season, the town of Coal Valley was renamed Hope Valley, after the coal mine was closed.

Currently, in When Calls the Heart season 12, the storyline starts after Jack's unexpected death, with the town slowly returning to its way of life. Nathan and Elizabeth were seen dating, even despite Nathan's insecurities about being overshadowed by Jack's death. Nathan also wanted to become a role model for Little Jack, to which he devoted his energies.

On the other hand, it was revealed that Emily and Angela would be graduating soon, with Angela aspiring to attend a college for the blind in Hamilton. Though her mother seemed reluctant to agree to this plan, Angela has been determined to succeed.

Meanwhile, the younger children of Hope Valley also achieved a milestone, as Little Jack and Lily began their first year of school. Both of them seemed a little overwhelmed but relied on each other for some support to navigate their new environment.
