Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story covers a sordid double murder
The murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez by their own sons created a media firestorm when the news first emerged. Jose and Kitty were found dead on August 20, 1989, killed by multiple shotgun wounds.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were at the crime scene when the police first arrived and fabricated an alibi by claiming that they'd been out watching a screening of Tim Burton's Batman film and had gone to the "Taste of LA" festival at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
The police initially bought the alibi and didn't investigate the brothers any further, instead focusing on suspects who may have had a motive to want Jose and Kitty dead. Thanks to the brothers gaining control of the family inheritance and spending the money extravagantly, they eventually fell under police suspicion.

The police went to Lyle and Erik's friend, Craig Cigarnelli, and convinced him to wear a wire while he asked Erik about the murder. However, Erik denied killing his parents, resulting in the sting operation coming up empty.
Erik did, however, confess his guilt to his psychologist Jerome Oziel. Jerome didn't inform the authorities about this but did tell his mistress, Judalon Smyth. After his relationship with his mistress soured, she spoke to the authorities, leading to Lyle and Erik being arrested.
The trial of the Menendez brothers occurred in 1993. It was broadcast by Court TV and became a media sensation.
The prosecution argued that the Menendez brothers killed their parents for financial reasons. Meanwhile, the defense argued that the brothers had killed their parents after experiencing a lifetime of severe abuse under them, including physical, emotional and s*xual abuse.
The brothers were eventually convicted of first-degree murder and have been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
Going by the trailers of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, some of the abuse allegations against Jose and Kitty Menendez will be incorporated into the series.
