Netflix’s adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude, based on Gabriel García Márquez's iconic novel, is set to premiere on December 11, 2024 at 12:00 AM PST. One of the founding works of magical realism, the book is considered seminal in Spanish and has sold more than 50 million copies.
The first season of One Hundred Years of Solitude will have eight episodes, with an additional eight planned for a future release. The series, filmed entirely in Colombia, recreates the fictional town of Macondo and spans multiple generations of the Buendía family.
The series aims to recreate the novel's multiple themes of love, war, madness, and family curses through its 16 episodes. The cast includes Claudio Cataño, Marco Antonio González, Diego Vásquez, Susana Morales, and Marleyda Soto, among others.
Cataño who plays Colonel Aureliano talked about his motivation behind taking the role, saying,
“Macondo and its host of characters, who I truly feel as my own blood, are universal, but at the same time so unique; so from Colombia, so beautifully tragic that it is impossible not to be trapped in this world.”

What is One Hundred Years of Solitude about?
The story of One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the founding and rise of the fictional town of Macondo, focusing on the Buendía family across seven generations. With magical realism at its center, the plot will explore the ideas of love, war, memory, isolation, and the inescapable cycles of history.
The directors of the show, Alex García López and Laura Mora talked to Tudum by Netflix about their experience of working on the show. López who directed Episodes 1, 2, 3, 7, and 8, said,
“Directing this project has been both a challenge and an adventure; after all, in life, taking risks is necessary to give meaning to what we do, when diving into the adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude, my intention was to create something authentic that carries the stature of an international production, because the story deserves it.”
Laura Mora, who worked on Episodes 4,5 and 6, added,
“As a filmmaker, and as a Colombian, it has been an honor and a huge challenge to work on a project as complex and that carries as much responsibility as One Hundred Years of Solitude, always striving to understand the difference between the literary and audiovisual languages,"
She continued,
"and to be able to construct images that contain the beauty, poetry, and depth of a work that has impacted the entire world. We’ve done it with love and respect for the novel, with the support of an exceptional technical and human team.”
The story begins with José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, cousins who defy societal norms by marrying and leaving their village. Their desire for a new life led to the discovery of a land by a river and they established the town of Macondo.
Over time in the plot of the novel, Macondo grows and becomes a microcosm of Latin American history, witnessing moments of utopia, corruption, civil war, and modernization. The recurring theme of solitude haunts each generation and is marked by the characters' personal choices and the time and history of the story.
