A brief recap of Severance season 1

youtube-cover

Severance season 1 followed the employees of Lumon Industries, Mark S. (Adam Scott), Helly R. (Britt Lower), Dylan G. (Zach Cherry), and Irving B. (John Turturro), as they worked in the company's Macrodata Refinement division.

They volunteered to undergo the severance program, which split their memories into two distinct halves, their work and non-work selves. This was done by inserting a chip in their brain. The work self, known as the Innie, operated strictly within the severed floor of the company. Similarly, the non-work self, called the Outie, existed only outside of working hours.

A severed person led two distinct lives, with one having no knowledge of the other's existence. However, it all changed when Mark met his work best friend Petey (Yul Vazquez) in the outside world after the latter was reintegrated.

Soon, Dylan learnt about the overtime contingency, a special protocol where the Innies can be 'woken up' in the outside world. He, along with the others, planned to find out about their respective Outies by using this protocol. But, what they found astounded them.

Mark discovered that his deceased wife, Gemma, was not only alive but also worked as the wellness counselor, Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman) at Lumon. Helly was revealed to be the daughter of the company's current CEO, Jame Eagan. She joined the program as a publicity stunt to demonstrate its effectiveness to the skeptical public.

Meanwhile, Irving figured out that he was a former military veteran, and that his work crush, Burt Goodman (Christopher Walken), had a partner in the real world.

Dylan, who stayed back at the Lumon office to activate the protocol, was stopped by his supervisor Milchick (Tramell Tillman), after being alerted by Cobel. The season ended with the trio reverting to their Outie states right in the middle of making a huge discovery about Lumon and its sinister workings.

What to expect from Severance season 2 episode 1?

As the show's first season ended with several lingering questions, fans can hope to find answers to some of them in Severance season 2 episode 1.

Going by the official trailer, Severance season 2 episode 1 will deal with the aftermath of the Innies breaching the severance protocol. The group will resume work at Lumon, becoming the "face of the severance reform," as noted by a character, Milchick.

Mark, who is now aware that Cobel and his neighbor Mrs. Selvig are the same person, will likely confront his boss about Lumon and Gemma. Similarly, Helly and Irving will be forced to come to terms with what they learned about their outer identities.

On December 4, 2024, the show's creator Dan Erickson told Vanity Fair that the characters discover their "autonomy" in season 2.

"In season one, the Innies are basically children. They’re adults in some ways, but experientially they’re children, having your first crush and finding out things about yourselves. Season two, it’s a little bit more of an adolescence story. There’s more of a sense of finding your own autonomy and deciding who you are going to be, as opposed to who you’ve been told you are," he added.

Furthermore, the second season will also introduce multiple new characters. Among the new actors joining the show's second chapter are Gwendoline Christie, Alia Shawkat, Bob Balaban, Stefano Carannante, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Merritt Wever, John Noble, and Robby Benson.
