What We Do in the Shadows season 5 recap
Guillermo became a vampire, for a while at least
Becoming a vampire has always been Guillermo’s life goal. However, there is one factor that prevented his vampire-friend Nandor from “turning” him: Guillermo is a descendant of the famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing (the Dutch polymath who consolidates the anti-Dracula group in Dracula, the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker).
Nevertheless, Guillermo has always wanted to be a vampire, not just remain “familiar” to the vampires. In season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows, his wish was finally granted, not by Nandor, but by his friend Derek.
This fact was divulged to the group by the Guide in episode 9 of season 5. Feeling betrayed by Guillermo’s act, Nandor vowed revenge. However, as time passed, he realized that Guillermo was a dear friend and that killing him would only make him sad. Thus, the two reconciled.
As season 5 neared its conclusion, it became increasingly clear that Guillermo was still not a complete vampire, he did show some characteristics of the undead but there were some human features that he could not let go of.
When asked by Nandor in the season finale, Guillermo confessed that he would like to go back to being a human being, if possible. Nandor granted his wish by driving a stake through Derek’s heart—an act that restored Guillermo to human.
Derek had a transformation of his own, thanks to the necromancer
Derek was the medium through which Guillermo could fulfill his long-cherished wish of being a vampire. However, What We Do in the Shadows season 5 also made clear that he was not yet ready to be one. For instance, even though he could drink human blood offered by the others, he was still not ready to kill living human beings as the others would.
Thus, Nandor decided to carry out a ritual whereby Guillermo could become human once again. This required him to drive a stake through Derek, which he could not bring himself to do. Nandor did it instead.
However, after the ritual ended, Guillermo and Laszlo took Derek to Wallace, the necromancer. The latter resurrected Derek as a zombie. As a zombie, Derek had difficulty communicating but Topher, another zombie, assured the group that Derek would soon learn everything.
There was a grave situation concerning the Guide
The Guide has been one of the most intriguing characters in What We Do in the Shadows, entering and exiting the narrative in enigmatic ways. Season 5 was no different.
The vampire-party on Staten Island has usually been quite dismissive of the Guide aka the "Floating Woman". In season 5, she had the chance to have her revenge. She tricked the vampires into coming to an estate called the Morrigan Manor and then trapped them in silver cages.
She spared Guillermo, though, citing that he had never been rude to her. However, the danger was eventually overcome when the vampires could convince her that they misbehaved with her only due to their nature by virtue of being vampires. In other words, they could not help it and meant nothing by it.
This was sufficient to appease the Guide. It remains to be seen what her relationship with the group will be like in What We Do in the Shadows season 6.
