Netflix's Untold will reveal the story of Connor Stalions, formerly of the NCAA, on August 27. The sports documentary series is set to cover the sign-stealing scandal for Michigan's Wolverines which Connor Stalions was implicated in. The episode will be titled "Sign Stealer".

Sign-stealing refers to the practice of secretly taking note of the hand signals sent out by the coach of the opposing team to the players on the field. Recording these hand signals using electronic devices is prohibited. The violation of this prohibition is at the root of the scandal currently faced by Michigan's Wolverines.

Despite Connor Stalions's resignation, the investigation into the sign-stealing scandal is still ongoing.

In leaks of the upcoming Netflix Untold episode about the scandal, as reported by Outkick on August 12, Connor goes into further details on his involvement in the scheme, saying:

"I propped my phone up and just recorded myself doing every possible signal I could ever imagine. Any signal I've ever seen, any signal that we've done, any signal that any other team's have done, and any variation of any signal."

A lot of the shady activities surrounding the sign-stealing scheme had been traced back to Connor Stalions when the case was first investigated. For instance, Connor was the one who purchased multiple tickets to matches in his own name over the course of three years.

Hand signals have been a necessity in all NCAA games aside from bowl games due to the gaps in resources available to different teams and universities. This has especially become the case since the increased prominence of no-huddle offenses from the 21st century onwards.

While decoding hand-signals isn't forbidden in and of itself, recording hand-signals or doing any in-person scouting of opponents in advance is against the rules.

Specifically, the rule that Connor Stalions and the rest of the people involved in the sign-stealing scheme ran afoul of is NCAA bylaw 11.6.1. It states:

"Off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents (in the same season) is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaws 11.6.1.1 and 11.6.1.2"

The aforementioned exceptions do not apply in the case surrounding Michigan's Wolverines team.

Aside from Connor Stalions, the coach Jim Harbaugh was also investigated in connection with this scandal, though initially, the NCAA couldn't prove a link between him and Connor's activities.

Even so, Jim Harbaugh was eventually suspended for the last three games of the 2023 season.

Also implicated in the scandal was linebackers coach Chris Partridge, who was accused of coaching members of the Wolverines on how to respond if questioned about the sign-stealing scheme.

In a statement to social media, Chris denied being involved in the scheme and instead claimed that he'd merely run afoul of a rule prohibiting discussing an ongoing NCAA investigation with the members of the team.

While the investigation of the sign-stealing scandal was ongoing, NCAA President Charlie Baker met with the Big Ten and shared some details of the information they had. He claimed this was done out of concern that this information might impact the outcome of the games, telling the Associated Press:

“I don’t regret doing it because sitting on that information, I think we would have put everyone, including Michigan, in an awful place...And at the end of the day, no one believes at this point that Michigan didn’t win the national title fair and square. So, I think we did the right thing.”
