Plot summary
The movie's official synopsis by 20th Century Fox reads,
"The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful 'Alien' franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe."
The plot centers around a pair of siblings—Rain, an orphaned miner, and her android "brother" Andy. The secondary characters include Tyler (Rain's ex), Kay (Tyler's sister), Bjorn (Tyler and Kay's cousin), and Navarro (Bjorn's adopted sister).
Deadly encounters begin when the crew accidentally unleashes a horde of facehuggers - a parasitoid in the Alien universe. This is followed by graphic, brutal scenes of their fight, depicted with the franchise’s signature intensity.
In an interview with TheWrap dated August 19, 2024, Álvarez talked about his inspiration for the film, saying,
“I did know that it needed to look like the original films. That retro-futurism was something that I was interested in, that I didn’t want holographics floating around or anything like that."
He further added:
"It’s not just for us who are of that generation that grew up with those movies. It’s also to give it to the new audience that will discover those things that they don’t see all time and they will love it."
Alien: Romulus is produced by Ridley Scott, the director and producer of the original Alien, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant, along with Michael Pruss, and Walter Hill.
