Jane the Virgin is a romantic comedy series that originally aired on The CW before getting licensed out to Netflix.
The series was a satirical adaptation of Venezuela's Juana la Virgen and aired on The CW from October 13, 2014, to July 31, 2019. The series stars Gina Rodriguez as Jane, a virgin, who ends up pregnant due to an accidental artificial insemination.
With The CW's licensing deal with Netflix expiring, the show will be taken off Netflix's streaming services on September 5, 2024. The series can still be viewed by residents of the United States on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.
Jane the Virgin leaves Netflix on September 5
Jane the Virgin is leaving Netflix due to the expiration of the licensing deal between The CW and Netflix. Back in May 15, 2019, Deadline had reported that the streaming deal between The CW and Netflix, which had first been made in 2011 and renewed in 2016, would expire with the termination of said deal.
At the time, this meant that series like Batwoman, Nancy Drew, and Riverdale had to look for individual streaming deals since they couldn't be covered under the Netflix-CW umbrella.
Jane the Virgin, which premiered in 2014, was covered under the deal throughout its original run, but due to five years passing since the deal's expiry, it will also be removed from Netflix's library on September 5, 2024.
As a consequence, viewers in the United States will have to seek out alternate means of watching the show. These include options for renting or purchasing the series on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, VUDU, and YouTube.
What is Jane the Virgin about?
The CW series is a satirical adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen and follows the story of Jane, played by Gina Rodriguez, who becomes a virgin mother after her doctor accidentally inseminates her during an examination.
This pregnancy ends up entangling her in the life of Rafael Solano, the owner of the Marbella Hotel who's the biological father of Jane's baby, and who had donated his sperm due to fertility issues. This also means that Jane's pregnancy is his last chance of becoming a father.
The series parodies and satirizes telenovela tropes through the representation of Jane's character, since she herself is a writer and a major telenovela buff.
The reason she remained a virgin for so long is because her grandmother pressured her to not engage in sexual activities till marriage. However, with her pregnancy, all of her life plans turned upside down.
