The upcoming season of Netflix's breakout spy thriller, The Night Agent season 2, will hit the screens next year. All episodes of the new season will be released on Netflix on Thursday, January 23, 2025. Created by Shawn Ryan, the series is based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk.
In the first season, released in March 2023, the show followed FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), a low-level agent tasked with monitoring an emergency phone line in the basement of the White House. “I love the idea of an underdog"- Shawn Ryan on inspiration for The Night Agent
Shawn Ryan, the creator and executive producer of the show, explained his idea behind adapting The Night Agent as a series in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in March. He said,
“I love the idea of an underdog. I love to watch kickass stuff as much as everyone else. But to me, it’s not as interesting to write the indestructible guy, the John Wicks of the world, the Jason Bournes that can take on 20 people at once."
He continued,
"I like the idea of an underdog, someone who is the least important person in a very important place, in this case, a low-level FBI agent who works in a windowless room in the basement of the White House. Everyone around him is more important than him."
Ryan added:
"He stumbles onto this thing and he’s suddenly, like in classic Hitchcock movies, somebody who is an ordinary person thrust into an extraordinary situation."
Recap of season 1 and plot of The Night Agent season 2
In season 1, Peter Sutherland worked as an FBI agent in the White House basement, monitoring a phone line that rarely rang. One night, he received a call from a tech CEO named Rose Larkin, whose aunt and uncle had been murdered.
What followed was a dangerous conspiracy involving a mole within the White House, and the search for the mole led Peter and Rose into a web of corruption, betrayal, and deadly secrets.
After successfully saving the President, uncovering the killers of Rose's family, and solving a year-old terrorist attack case, Peter left for his first mission as a night agent in the season 1 finale. Saving the President earned him the position, but fans are curious to see how Peter will sustain himself in a world "where danger is everywhere, and trust is in short supply."
The new teaser released by Netflix for The Night Agent season 2 opens with a phone call and ends with Peter making a coded phone call, a classic reversal from his role at the other end of the line. It also hints at the suspense around Peter's latest mission without disclosing any further details. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the show has already been renewed for a third season in October.
