Alfonso Basterra, one of the main accused for the murder of Asunta Basterra is serving his 18-year prison sentence in Penitentiary Centre of Teixeiro, Spain. He was found guilty of collaborating in the murder of his adopted daughter Asunta, while the chief accused was Rosario Porto, his estranged wife and Asunta's adoptive mother.

Netflix released the true crime story of the murder of Asunta Basterra by her parents in a series titled, The Asunta Case, on April 26, 2024.

Alfonso Basterra's appeals were rejected multiple times, once by the High Court of Justice of Galicia in 2016 and later by the Constitutional Court in 2017. Since then Alfonso has been in jail. As per the Spanish Prison System, he would be allotted a more relaxed regime in 2025, reports Today.com. He will enjoy more privileges and freedom if permitted an "open regime."

As mentioned, courts have rejected all appeals from Alfonso Basterra in The Asunta Case. Alfonso who was the adoptive father of victim, Asunta Basterra, was found guilty of the murder of his daughter along with his ex-wife, Rosario Porto.

Alfonso Basterra is firmly ensconced in the Penitentiary Centre of Teixeiro in northwestern Spain, serving his 18-year sentence. He has already spent half of his sentence in the Teixeiro prison, as per Today.com.

Alfonso maintains that he is innocent and announced to serve his sentence till the last day to prove his innocence. While his presence at the site of the murder was not established, his role in helping Porto with the murder of the girl was undeniable as per the court.

While he has communicated through letters from jail, he has a strict regime in the prison. Previously, he had written to his wife about planning suicide. Later, he wrote to producers of a documentary covering Asunta's case about wanting to reunite with his girl.

However, with nine more years of his prison life remaining, it is unclear whether Alfonso Basterra feels the love he proclaims for his adopted daughter.

Asunta Basterra was a Spanish girl of Chinese origin, adopted by Alfonso Basterra and his wife Rosario Porto at nine months of age. A13-year-old Asunta was found dead on the hillside of a country road outside Santiago in Spain after her adoptive parents reported her missing. The authorities suspected the parents after a series of strange events that happened before the kid passed away.

After a detailed investigation and collection of evidence and witnesses, the case went to trial. Testimonies from neighbors, CCTV footage, and other evidence helped the jury and the court find the Basterra-Porto couple guilty of the murder of Asunta.

Footages showed Rosario driving to the countryside with Asunta but returning alone. High doses of sleeping drugs in the child's blood and asphyxiation as the cause of death were investigated. The previous incidents of attempted strangulation by an unidentified person, Asunta's complaints about extreme drowsiness, and a recorded conversation between Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto, clinched the matter for the authorities.

While the court found Rosario guilty of first-degree murder, it maintained that the crime would have been impossible for her without equal assistance from Alfonso, making him guilty in equal parts. As such, both were sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The Netflix show presents The Asunta Case with a dramatic representation of the events and the trial. In the show, Iris Wu plays the role of Asunta Basterra Porto with Tristán Ulloa and Candela Peña portraying Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto respectively.

Netflix's The Asunta Case tries to look into the Spanish murder case and how the investigators pinned the perpetrators. Watch the series currently available for streaming on Netflix.
