As Jason Lytton's case has become a global phenomenon, thanks to Betrayal: A Father's Secret, which premiered on Hulu on July 30, 2024, it's time to look at one of the victims, Avaya Lytton, the stepdaughter of Jason and the eldest child of Ashley Lytton from her previous marriage.
In 2021, Jason's wife, Ashley, discovered that her husband possessed child p*rnography, which even included taped videos of Ashley's daughter Avaya Lytton from her previous marriage. Ashley, distraught at the revelation, arranged to meet him and have him arrested by the police. However, this secret changed everything, including the dynamic of the family.
After Avaya Lytton found out about her stepfather possessing her videos, she became insecure in her own house and soon decided to move out to live with her biological father. It was only after Ashley's son reached out to her that Avaya finally moved back home.
As of now, Avaya is 24 years old and has reconnected with her mother and her siblings. She even made an appearance on Hulu's Betrayal: A Father's Secret, where she opened up about her step-father.
As a sequel to Hulu's earlier podcast-based docu-series, Betryal: The Perfect Husband, which chronicled the crimes of Spencer Herron, a high-school teacher who was secretly a predator, Betrayal: A Father's Secret also delves into deep details of the case where a seemingly ordinary man was harboring a very dark secret.
Who is Avaya Lytton and what happened to her?
Avaya Lytton is the eldest daughter of Ashley Lytton. Ashley had Avaya and her brother from a previous marriage. When Ashley met Jason, one of the qualities of Jason that really impressed her was his affinity to her kids. In fact, when they got married, Avaya used to call Jason "dad."
However, on September 29, 2021, their entire world came crashing down when Ashley looked into Jason Lytton's iCloud while setting up his Venmo and found over 1000 pictures of minors in a compromising state. She immediately contacted the police and managed to get Jason arrested.
The most harrowing discovery Ashley made was a video of 15-year-old Avaya Lytton, who was also seemingly one of Jason's victims. Though Jason was arrested and charged, Avaya could not get over the trauma and started feeling unsafe in her own house. She told ABC News earlier:
"I could not be in public. I could not sit in a classroom. I could not be around other kids, either. I moved in with my dad, my biological father."
It was only after Avaya's brother reached out to her that she finally decided to return home and fix her bond with Ashley and the rest of the family. However, she is still very clear that she never wants to encounter her stepfather again, who was released from prison in August 2023.
In the documentary, Avaya Lytton said:
"I don’t want him looking at me. I don’t want him seeing me. I don’t want him nothing. He completely ruined my family. He ruined our lives,...He ruined me. I’m mentally not the same. I have extreme anxiety now. I have depression and have really bad PTSD. I would want him to be in prison. I don’t want him to look at another child."
Avaya is 24 years old now and continues to live her life trying to process and move past the trauma caused by Jason Lytton's actions.
Betrayal: A Father's Secret covers her case in more explicit detail.
