Ahead of the episode of See No Evil, let us dive into this case and observe what transpired in the murder of Corey Lee Hughes.
Who was Corey Lee Hughes and how was he killed?
Corey Lee Brown was born on February 18, 1992, and grew up in Dubois County, Indiana. Described as a kind personality who was always looking out for others, Corey was perhaps the last person people around him thought would become a victim of a homicide.
By June 2019, Corey was a father to Eric Hughes, Karson Hughes, and Kali Snow Hughes. He shared two of the kids with Megan Frazier, and despite staying separately, he was a dutiful father and co-parent.
On the morning of June 21, 2019, a concerned neighbor called 911 to report that they had spotted a man lying in a pool of blood outside his house, which also seemed vandalized. The police rushed to find that Corey Lee Hughes was shot in the head, and though he was breathing, he passed away after being taken to Deaconess Hospital in Indiana.
How was Brandon Key Brown involved in the murder?
As the police started looking into clues, they discovered that Corey was alive till 7:14 am, around 15 minutes before the crime was reported. This proved that he was murdered in that time frame. The police also found a surveillance camera opposite Corey's house and discovered that a white SUV had parked outside Corey's home for 4-6 minutes, and a man had exited around that time.
Soon, a tip confirmed that the man was Brandon Key Brown, who also had a rich criminal history. His crimes included battery, robbery, and theft.
When the police found the vehicle from the surveillance footage, they began interrogating Brandon Key Brown and found other shreds of evidence, like blood, in his car to link him to the crime. Under the pressure of the interrogation, Brown claimed that he knocked on Corey's door, but quite unexpectedly, Corey attacked him with a knife.
He claimed that after the attack, he blacked out and only regained consciousness while driving away. However, the jury was never going to believe this, so Brandon pleaded guilty in June 2020 and was sentenced to 65 years in prison. He appealed his sentence in July 2020, but it was dismissed.
Currently, Brandon Key Brown remains incarcerated at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Indiana.
The upcoming episode of See No Evil will cover this case in more detail.
