The 1995 murder of elementary school teacher Mary Catherine Edwards by Clayton Foreman will be the subject of the next episode of 48 Hours, which will be released on November 9 on CBS
This homicide case remained cold for years, until DNA tech advancements and past DNA evidence, helped the investigators crack this case and link Foreman to this crime in 2021, for which he received a life sentence in 2024.
As per prison records, Clayton Foreman is incarcerated at the George Beto Unit, in Tennessee Colony, Texas, serving his life sentence.
What did Clayton Foreman do and how was he found guilty?
Clayton Foreman murdered Mary Catherine Edwards on January 14, 1995, as per reports by CBS. Edwards was found in her bathtub, in an incapacitated state. She was handcuffed and se*ually assaulted when her lifeless body was discovered by her parents Mary Ann and Lum Cassell Edwards Jr. The autopsy reports revealed that Mary Catherine Edwards died because of drowning and asphyxiation.
There was initially no lead on this case and it went cold and stayed unsolved for years. However, the DNA samples collected from the crime scene were stored carefully over the years.
In 2020, this case had a major breakthrough when the DNA samples collected decades before from the crime scene, were once more re-evaluated. Reportedly, the semen found on the victim’s body matched with one of the blood relatives of Mary Catherine Edwards, who was on the family tree (created by DNA samples and kinship testing), made by the detectives, to find the killer.
Arrest and sentencing of Clayton Foreman
Foreman was initially arrested in 2021, by Ranger Bess and Aaron Lewallen, who cuffed Clayton Foreman with the same handcuff that he had used on Mary Catherine Edwards before. Reportedly, Foreman had a history of se*ual assault, for which he had received a 3-year probation sentence earlier.
In 2024, the jury declared Foreman guilty of capital murder, and he was sentenced to life with chances of parole after 30 years. Post Clayton Foreman's conviction, his ex-wife Dianna Coe told 48 Hours about how Foreman had a fascination for handcuffs. He used the same handcuffs on Mary Catherine Edwards, after killing her. Talking about the same, Coe also revealed:
"He had a billy club that he kept…by the bed. You know, said it was for protection. And I remember that he had ordered those handcuffs ... Well, he had them hung over the rearview mirror."
Allegedly, Foreman also falsely claimed to be a police officer. His ex, Dianna, told 48 Hours that Foreman had replied coldly after hearing about Catherine's death, which had raised suspicion. Here is what she said about the same:
"I think I was, you know, crying and I said, 'oh, my God,' I said, 'somebody has murdered Catherine. And — and he goes, 'Oh, really?' Just like no emotion, which I thought that was odd."
The synopsis for the 48 Hours episode titled, Tracking the Killer of Mary Catherine, reads:
"A schoolteacher is murdered in her own home. Years later investigators discover she was a bridesmaid at the killer's wedding."
