Why did Connie Brown murder Billie Ray Brown?
Connie Brown met her husband, Billy Ray Brown, through her father, Johnny Nealy. Although Billy was 22 years older than Connie, the pair eventually got hitched and had three children together.
On June 21, 2000, the police received a call from 1280 Olive Drive in Green Sea, near Myrtle Beach, requesting help. They arrived on the scene to find Billy Ray Brown lying dead near his bed in a pool of blood. The crime scene also included Billy's friend Ronnie McDowell dead in the hallway. There were blood trails throughout the house, and as per Connie's version to the police, the crime was committed by a duo of masked assailants.
Billy Ray and Ronnie McDowell were brutally beaten and stabbed. The police first suspected Connie's involvement when all three of her children stated that they hadn't seen any of the assailants and were awakened by their mother before fleeing the house. The children stated that Connie told them that "two men came in to rob Daddy."
Connie also told the police that she woke up to a strange noise at around 10:30 to see two masked men coming in and assaulting Billy. She fled to her father's trailer beside her house while Ronnie tried to stop the masked men.
Connie pointed towards her brother, Andy Nealy, as one of the murderers. However, when the police went to Andy and Connie's mother's house in North Carolina, she provided an alibi for Andy from the night.
However, Melba Nealy (Andy and Connie's mother) provided police with a rationale for the killings. Billy Ray had been hitting Connie and the kids, and this was conveyed to Melba and Andy. After discovering this information, Melba and Andy advised that Billy Ray needed to be taught a lesson.
Police started to unfold bits and pieces of what had transpired. Melba stated that her two children, Andy and Renee Young, and her boyfriend, Jodis Washington, went to the Brown residence.
Melba told the police that Billy Ray had come outside after Connie had opened the door. Andy beat him with a stick, and Washington allegedly slit Billy Ray's neck with a knife before the gang departed, contradicting Connie and her children's account.
Although Andy and Melba Nealy had admitted to some of what happened that night, Washington and Renee Young were fleeing the police. Washington finally turned himself in. When authorities ultimately apprehended Young, she stated that all four went there to kill Billy Ray Brown. She also stated that Connie knew all about the plan and was a part of it.
Thus, Connie Brown wanted to kill Billy along with her family to put an end to his abusive behavior towards her and their children.
Connie Brown, her mother, her sister, and her brother were all sentenced to life in prison. Stay tuned for more such cases on Snapped on Oxygen.
