The murder case involving Crystal Mangum will be featured on Snapped: Behind Bars season 2, where the episode takes a deep dive into the infamous case of stabbing her boyfriend to death. The second episode of the season will air on September 8, 2024, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
The episode features a new interview with Mangum from prison where she talks about her life and the events that led to her imprisonment for the murder of her boyfriend, Reginald Daye.
Crystal Mangum is currently incarcerated at Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She was sentenced in 2013 for the second-degree murder of Reginald Daye with a term ranging from 14 to 18 years. Her projected release date is February 27, 2026, depending on her behavior and parole board decisions.
During her time in prison, Crystal Mangum has made several legal moves including an appeal against her 2013 conviction arguing that certain trial testimonies were inadmissible. Despite her efforts her grievances regarding her legal representation have been dismissed by the North Carolina Bar Association.
Additionally, in 2018 Crystal Mangum attempted to file motions against the Durham County Police Department and the District Attorney's Office claiming malicious prosecution concerning larceny charges linked to two money orders from Daye. These motions were ultimately dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
About Crystal Mangum's legal disputes
Crystal Mangum’s legal troubles began notably in March 2006 when she worked as an exotic dancer and performed at a party for the Duke University lacrosse team. Mangum was intoxicated and after an altercation with her fellow dancer, she falsely accused three team members of raping her at the event when police arrived.
Her allegations led to the arrest of the accused. It ignited a major scandal that drew national attention due to the racial and social disparities involved because Mangum is Black and the accused were all white.
The Durham County District Attorney, Mike Nifong initially supported Mangum's claims and pursued the case aggressively. But the case began to crumble as evidence contradicted Mangum’s account. Key to the disintegration of the case was the DNA analysis which revealed none of the accused’s DNA on Mangum.
In 2007 after the North Carolina Attorney General took over the case the charges were dropped and the accused were declared innocent. The fallout led to Nifong’s disbarment for ethical breaches including withholding exculpatory evidence.
Mangum's legal woes continued beyond the Duke lacrosse case. In February 2010 Durham police responded to a call from Mangum’s residence where they found her and her then-boyfriend Milton Walker in a dispute.
Mangum attempted to burn Walker’s belongings in the bathtub resulting in her arrest on charges including attempted murder, arson, and child abuse. She was later found guilty of several other charges but acquitted of arson.
How did Crystal Mangum murder her boyfriend?
In April 2011, Crystal Mangum faced significant legal issues following an incident involving her then-boyfriend, Reginald Daye. She stabbed Daye during an argument and he succumbed to his injuries ten days later.
Mangum was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and after Daye’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder.
During her trial in November 2013, Mangum claimed self-defense stating that she had acted out of fear for her life. However, evidence and testimonies supported the prosecution's case that Daye was trying to retreat during their confrontation.
The jury convicted Mangum of second-degree murder and she was sentenced to serve between 14 years and 18 years in prison. Since her conviction, Crystal Mangum has been involved in several legal proceedings including appeals against her conviction and accusations of malicious prosecution for unrelated charges.
As of 2018, she was incarcerated at Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Her case remains a point of public and legal discourse particularly in discussions about race, justice, and the media’s role in shaping public perception.
