Darren Lorke stabbed his neighbor Kevin Skeyhill with an eight-inch camouflage knife
As per reports by ABC News, Darren Lorke, full name Darren Geoffrey Lorke, murdered his neighbor Kevin Skeyhill in September 2017. The crime took place on the victims' property in Tungkillo, Australia. Lorke was accused of ambushing Skeyhill and killing him by stabbing him several times as per reports by The Advertiser. Allegedly the crime took place because of a “bitter fencing dispute”.
Darren Lorke attacked Kevin Skeyhill with an "eight-inch camouflage knife” as per reports by ABC News. On the night of the crime, the victim had gone home with a companion, according to the court hearing. It was a long night of partying for both of them. Darren Lorke allegedly stabbed Skeyhill after emerging from a bush on the victim's property, where Lorke was hiding when Skeyhill went to confront him after returning home drunk.
Reportedly, after the crime took place, the killer dragged the victim's body “about 14 meters up his driveway”, as per ABC News. After this, he called the emergency helpline and stated that his neighbor had attacked him and therefore in self-defense he killed him. When accused of the above crime, Darren Lorke didn’t plead guilty and called it an act of self-defense.
Darren Lorke was sentenced to life
The prosecutors, in this case, alleged that the victim and the perpetrator had been feuding with each other for a long period, and the murder may have been motivated by the long-standing animosity between the two. Another indication that they detested one another was the presence of security cameras and trespassing signs on either of their properties.
A 2019 Supreme Court jury found Lorke guilty of killing his neighbor and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 20 years. However, his non-parole period of 20 years was later reduced to 19 years considering the time he had spent in custody and detention.
After the sentencing of Darren Lorke, the victim Kevin Skeyhill's son Nicholas Skeyhil said that he would "try and rebuild" his family from here despite the tragic passing of his father. He said outside court:
"There's no real winners but it's a lot of weight off the shoulders, we are just going to try and rebuild from here.."
