Season 3 episode 6 of Killer Relationships with Faith Jenkins, titled Beneath the Surface, will focus on this brutal homicide. The episode will air on September 21, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. EST on Oxygen. The official synopsis for the same reads:
"Ed Bozarth lives life on the sea, but paradise turns deadly when the dashing adventurer is found dead on his boat in Key Largo, Fla. Just below the surface, investigators discover a secret past, a life full of intrigue and enemies within."
Edward Bozarth's body was found seven days after his death
Edward Bozarth, who used to live on his boat, was found murdered on July 1, 2007, in the engine room of the boat. The crew found his deceased body days after the murder. His skull was hammered down, and the cause of death was blunt force trauma, as per autopsy reports.
When the first officers arrived at the scene, they found Ed’s body in a canvas sail storage bag. A belt was tied to his neck and he was bound with ropes. There were wounds all over his body. However, what made the investigation hard was that no DNA or any lead was found at the crime scene to go forward with the investigation of the homicide.
Edward was a mysterious man, as reported by CBS, who worked for the CIA and DEA and was also deployed for several secret missions. Regarding the investigations, the officers found his wife Denise as a prime suspect. Reportedly, Denise Bozarth had left Ed a week before he was found dead.
Another suspect was the marine guard Dave Campbell. It was also discovered that Dave Campbell and Denise had an intimate relationship. When the detectives discovered that Ed had more than $600,000 in a trust fund, which could have been a driving force for her wife to kill him, they started investigating her closely. Denise Bozarth also wanted to divorce Ed, as per reports.
Even Dave Campbell suspected Denise of this homicide, revealing to the authorities that Denise would benefit from Ed’s death and inherit tons of money, as reported by CBS.
However, when Dennis blamed the murder on Dave, he told CBS that,
"The very first thing to come out of her mouth was, Dave. That's when I really got mad. I mean, I really got mad. I said I couldn't believe she said that. So that's when I volunteered some information to [detectives]."
Dave Campbell revealed that Denise Bozarth wanted to hire a killer and pay $10,0000 to anyone who would kill Ed and stage his death as a mere accident. Bonnie Colon, another important witness, also revealed that Denise Bozarth often talked about killing Ed and inheriting his money. She told CBS,
"She would always just tell me things, like, Oh man, I just wish I could kill him. It was like she was almost soliciting it from me. I just brushed it off and said, Oh, let's go and have fun; let's not worry about killing anybody; let's go have a couple of drinks and relax. But she was really intense on it. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't mention killing her husband to me."
Denise Bozarth was arrested in 2014
Even after Denise Bozarth failed a polygraph test in 2007, she was not taken into custody as there was only circumstantial evidence against her, and no murder weapon or DNA traces were retrieved from the scene of the crime.
However, in 2012, Denise was interrogated again, and she confessed to the crime. She claimed that her husband, who would beat her often, on the day of the crime, came at her with a gun, after which she killed him by hammering his skull.
2 years later, in 2014, after Denise Bozarth's previous confession was ruled invalid in court, she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sent to prison for 14 years. In 2024, she was released after completing her sentence.
