What is the story behind the murders committed by Dephne Wright?
Dephne Wright was a spiritual consultant from an elderly Vietnamese couple named Long Nguyen and Huong Ly, who lived in Arlington, Texas. They jointly had a commercial sewing business headed by their son-in-law Chau Tran, which saw a rapid decline in profits in 2011. As per Vietnamese superstitious culture, the elderly couple began to believe their business had been cursed.
To prevent a bad omen, the couple began to consult a spiritual adviser, Dephne Wright from Houston, whose advertisement they had received from a Vietnamese newspaper. After the initial consultation, the couple soon started making drives from Houston back and forth, becoming a frequent customer of Miss Wright. However, their business kept facing a sharp decline, with their finances rapidly fading.
Daphne Wright charged between $ 10 to $ 50 an hour for her consultation and proposed a credit agreement for the couple where they could have the consultation, and pay the fees later. The couple agreed to do so, and Wright kept providing more prescriptions to save the business, though none worked.
However, over time Long Nguyen and Huong Ly kept getting more buried in debt to their spiritual adviser. As per an NBC DFW article, the couple's debt summed up to nearly $ 300,000, which started causing a rift between Wright and the couple. Even after repeatedly asking the couple to solicit the money, when the elderly couple failed to do so, Dephne Wright devised a plan to kill the couple and retrieve her money, from their life insurance policies.
As per the Toronto Sun, Daphne Wright hired Bobby Guillory and his nephew Bobby Guillory, to kill the couple, and gain their life insurance money which together summed to a total of $ 1 million. Dephne Wright provided them with a duplicate key to the couple's apartment in Arlington. It was on the night of June 9, 2012, the assassins took a drive from Houston to accomplish their mission.
The murderers remained hidden in the apartment, waiting for the victims to enter the house from the front door. Right when the couple entered the residence, Willie hit them with a baseball bat, making them fall unconscious. The elderly couple were then dragged into the bedroom, and bonded with duct tape over their mouth and face. The couple was then shoved into a small closet where they suffocated, which led to their deaths.
It was the next day morning when their son-in-law Chau Tran called 911 emergency to check on the couple. As per Oxygen, when an Arlington police officer entered the residence, he found bloody fingerprints all over the room, and the dead bodies stuffed inside the closet. From the scene, the investigators found a half-smoked joint, and a beer bottle wrapped in a bandana, which indicated the murder to be a sign of gang buglery.
However, upon close observation the scene felt too perfect for a robbery, as if the culprits had fabricated it, to distract the authorities in their investigation. The DNA samples retrieved from the crime scene had no successful matches, hence the case went on pause for almost 3 years. Finally, it was on October 12, 2015, when medical examiners succeeded in retrieving a DNA sample from the saliva of the half-smoked joint.
As per Toronto Sun, when the authorities ran it through their records, they found it belonged to a teen convict named Willie Guillory. Upon investigation, Willie revealed that he and his uncle Bobby were hired by Dephne Wright in Houston. However, he added that their intention was just to threaten the couple and get the money, and the murder was completely an accident.
Willie agreed to hit Long Nguyen till he was unconscious and then snatch the neck chain from Huong Ly. When she tried to kick him away, he hit her head knocking her off. When Bobby Guillory was interrogated, he accepted his involvement and revealed that Dephne Wright offered them $ 10,000 to complete the job.
What happened to Dephne Wright?
It was then, that the authorities attained a search warrant on the residence of Dephne Wright, and they retrieved a record book, where she had listed all her clients from whom she owed money, with her credit arrangement. They found that the mystic owed money from several people, some of which even summed up to $ 50 thousand.
Wright was arrested by the authorities but denied confessing guilty or even speaking without a lawyer. As per an article in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, it was in September 2018, when Bobby Guillory confessed himself guilty of committing the murder of Long Nguyen and Huong Ly. He was charged with lifetime imprisonment, without any chance of parole.
His nephew, Willie Guillory was also found guilty of being involved in multiple murders and received 20 years in prison. Exactly a year later, it was in September 2019, when Dephne Wright was finally found guilty of plotting the dual murders of Long Nguyen and Huong Ly. As per an article on Case Text, Danny Tran the son of Chau Tran testified that his grandparents had been at his home for a birthday celebration on June 9, 2012.
He testified that he recognized Wright, and had visited her house in Houston with his father, a couple of times. Both Willie and Bobby testified that they had been directed by Wright to carry out the multiple murders. All her appeals were overruled. Dephne Wright was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment, and currently spends her time in prison, without any chance of parole, for the rest of her life.
