Doctor Odyssey is the new love boat series on ABC and Hulu. It follows the Odyssey's new onboard doctor, Dr. Max, and a small but mighty medical team as they save lives in the middle of unique medical crises miles from shore.

The series debuted with two episodes dropping live on ABC on September 26, 2024, and on Hulu the next day. So far, the Joshua Jackson-led medical drama has made waves with its high-stakes medical emergencies and a luxurious cruise ship setting complete with two dazzling pools.

However, viewers may be surprised that Doctor Odyssey was filmed in elaborate sets in Los Angeles instead of on a real-life cruise ship.

Where was Doctor Odyssey filmed?

Los Angeles, California's dramatic and versatile location served as the backdrop of Doctor Odyssey. The show was filmed in and around the greater LA area to provide authentic portside scenes in the medical procedural drama. Most of the exterior scenes in the series were filmed in San Pedro and Wilmington.

Port of Los Angeles, in San Pedro, provided an authentic picture of scenes in the series depicting a luxury cruise lined docked or sailing off the port. The area also has several cruise ship terminals, like the Los Angeles World Cruise Center, and buzzing maritime activity, making it an ideal location for filming true-to-life portside sequences.

The nearby Wilmington area also offers an abundance of suburban and industrial landscapes that add visual interest to the series. It's part of the port area but has a mix of relaxed neighborhoods and busy shipping activities, making it ideal for shooting different scenes.

Was Doctor Odyssey filmed on a cruise ship?

While Doctor Odyssey Season 1 is set on a luxury cruise ship, the filming never happened on an actual cruise liner. The sequences inside the cruise ship, as seen in the series, were entirely studio-based. The production used elaborate soundstages in Los Angeles to recreate the extravagant interiors of The Odyssey, including its state-of-the-art medical facilities, lavish ballrooms, opulent cabins, and sprawling deck areas.

Joshua Jackson, aka Dr. Max Bankman, was admittedly relieved that the production opted to film in studio sets instead of an actual cruise ship in the middle of the ocean. He told Entertainment Weekly on September 5:

"If we were filming on an actual cruise ship, it would make it very hard for me to drop my daughter off at school in the morning."

He also confirmed that he's never been on a cruise ship before, adding that while he's been on boats before, a big cruise ship isn't his thing. Phillipa Soo, aka Nurse Megan, said she's never been on a cruise too, but if given the chance of a luxury holiday, she told Us Magazine on September 26 that she would like to "cruise along the coast for France."

What is Doctor Odyssey all about?

The new ABC series follows Joshua Jackson's Dr. Max Bankman as the new onboard doctor of the luxury cruise, The Odyssey. He's a charming, easy-going personality who charms the staff, including Nurse Avery (played by Phillipa Soo), but not his early rival Nurse Tristan (played by Sean Teale).

It follows their small medical team as they try to keep the ship's passengers safe and alive across unique medical crises. So far, in the Doctor Odyssey premiere, the team has saved people from iodine poisoning, overeating shrimp, excess cocktails, a penile fracture, a dislocated clavicle, and a man going overboard.

Catch the latest episodes of Doctor Odyssey live on ABC on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET and on Hulu every Friday.
