Cold Case Files: The Grim Sleeper premiers on A&E on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 9/8c, exploring Enietra Washington's survival and the rest of the brutal crimes of serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr.

Known as the “Grim Sleeper,” Franklin terrorized South Central Los Angeles for over 22 years, claiming at least ten victims. His only confirmed survivor, Enietra Washington, bravely recounted her harrowing encounter in the episode.

Franklin was brought to justice with the help of Enietra. Even though she was hurt, her testimony was very important in convicting one of Los Angeles' most notorious killers. The documentary shows how the Grim Sleeper was able to keep attacking for years because the system didn't do anything about it.

After decades of the attack, Enietra has been able to rebuild her life. Her strength has become a lasting symbol of strength and survival in the face of adversity. For people who have been victims of violent crimes or who are suffering because of institutional neglect, Enietra Washington's voice is still very important.

Especially when the lives of people from disadvantaged groups are at risk, her story shows how important justice and accountability are.

Enietra Washington meets Lonnie Franklin in South LA

During her trip to a friend's house in South Los Angeles on November 19, 1988, Enietra Washington, a 30-year-old mother of two, ran into Lonnie Franklin Jr.

While driving, she saw his orange Pinto parked by the road and stopped to look at it. After some talking, she reluctantly agreed to take Franklin's ride. What started out as a harmless act turned into a nightmare that seriously threatened her life.

When Enietra got into the car, she noticed that Franklin was friendly. After taking a detour, though, he suddenly became angry and told her that she was disrespecting him. Without giving her a chance, he shot her in the chest. She felt nothing, as she was shocked and confused. She tried to run away, but Franklin told her that he would shoot her again if she didn't stop.

Enietra started to beg for her life when she realized how bad things were, but she had no idea what terrible things were about to happen.

Franklin kept driving through the streets of South LA after shooting her. For a long time, Enietra Washington thought that she saw Franklin taking Polaroid pictures of her while she was dreaming. Even though she was badly hurt, she found the door handle, pushed herself out, and fell to the asphalt. She dragged herself to the curb, determined to stay alive.

Even though she was hurt, Enietra Washington got to her friend's house and fell down on the porch. After a few hours, her friend came back and asked for help. When they got her to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, they saw that the bullet had broken one of her lungs. She got better after three weeks, and her story helped police figure out that the person who attacked her was the Grim Sleeper.

In the years after the attack, Enietra Washington lived in fear of her attacker returning. Her serial killer diagnosis came in 2006 after the LAPD did little investigation. Finally, Franklin Jr. was arrested in 2010. The trial testimony of Enietra Washington helped convict him and ensure justice.

Today, Washington's life is very different from the terror she went through. People are still inspired by her bravery and strength, and she often tells her story to push for better protections for underrepresented groups. She's still a voice for people who have been through similar trauma, even though she has emotional scars.
