Eve Wiley was one of the people interviewed for Netflix's latest docuseries The Man with 1000 Kids, which was released on the platform recently. Wiley is an activist advocating for tighter regulation of sperm donation. She is currently lobbying for the criminalization of fertility fraud at the state and federal levels in the USA.

Eve has spoken out against the actions of Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a sperm donor and the subject of the Netflix docuseries. He is estimated to have fathered thousands of children, according to the people who were interviewed. Jonathan was also at the center of several legal scandals due to allegations that he used deceptive means to circumvent legal regulations on sperm donation.

Eve Wiley was born after her mother was inseminated from a donor of her choosing from a sperm clinic. However, Eve later discovered that her mother's fertility doctor had secretly used his sperm for the insemination. She spoke about the impact this information had on her in a report by Time Magazine from July 2024. Eve said that when she found that, she was left wondering who she was and who her biological father was.

"In that moment, I knew that people lie. DNA does not lie… Here I was at 30 years old, starting over for the third time in my life, just wondering who am I, and who is my biological father?" Wiley said.

Eve Wiley wants fertility fraud regulated at the federal level

Eve Wiley has campaigned for stronger legislation against fertility fraud at both the state and federal levels. In 2019, she pushed for Texas to pass legislation against fertility fraud, which was passed, making Texas the third state in the US to have protections against fertility fraud. Since then, the number of states with fertility fraud legislation has gone up to 13.

Eva Wiley is currently lobbying for the passing of HR 451, also known as the Protecting Families from Fertility Fraud Act of 2023. Congresswomen Stephanie Bice and Mikie Sherrill introduced the Act in the House of Representatives on January 23, 2023. However, the Act has yet to pass in the House or Senate.

Time Magazine reported that Eve said that her activism was a way to find purpose in the pain she felt after discovering the falsehood she was told about her birth. Since fertility fraud wasn't a crime when it affected Eve's mother, she resolved to make it one.

Eve Wiley has also heard from Jonathan Jacob Meijer's alleged victims, including a couple. The couple Kate and Laura (names changed) told Time Magazine that they searched for any potential half-siblings their child, conceived from Jonathan's sperm, might have.

Eventually, they found a Facebook group of other people who had conceived children with Meijer's sperm donations. At the time, there were over 50 families and counting. Australian regulations have a limit on donating to only 5 to 10 families, depending on the state.

Laura told Time that it had been incredibly overwhelming and unsettling, as they would "never fully know how many" half-siblings there are.

Eve Wiley sympathized with their situation and urged them to go public with their account of events to the New York Times. As someone who had to deal with discovering many half-siblings of her own, Eve said that she felt "dread for these moms." She added that the children weren't "old enough yet to really understand" the deep complications that come with "having that number of half-siblings."

Fertility fraud has numerous public health risks if allowed to go unchecked, the most serious one being unknowing s*xual contact between blood relatives. The Man with 1000 Kids is currently streaming on Netflix.
