Ezra McCandless stabbed Alex Woodworth 16 times and killed him
As per reports by CBS, on March 22, 2018, Alex Woodworth was killed by Ezra McCandless, who stabbed him sixteen times in various parts of the body. After killing him, McCandless arrived at the doorway of a dairy farmer in a bloodied, bruised, barefoot, and muddy state. She claimed she had been abused, and when questioned, she revealed that her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her.
A day after Alex Woodworth was killed, his body was located hanging out from McCandless’s car, in a desolate road. The murder weapon, a knife, which belonged to McCandless, was also retrieved from near the crime scene. McCandless's father claimed to have given her the knife.
As per reports by CBS, when Detective Prock found the murder weapon, she interrogated Ezra, and this time, she said that Alex had found the knife in her car and attacked her with it.
She alleged that Alex had carved the word 'Boy' into her hand while attacking her. However, later in the investigation, all the injuries were found to be self-inflicted. Ezra also lied and said that Alex attacked her in the back seat of her car and when she got hold of the knife, she stabbed him and made a run for her life.
Alex had no defensive wounds and there was no blood in the backseat of the car, which made the detectives speculate that Ezra attacked him from the back and killed him.
What was the alleged motive behind this murder?
Ezra allegedly wanted to reconcile with her ex-lover, Jason Mengel (a medic), who had ended their relationship after he discovered Ezra was cheating on him with Alex Woodworth. It was speculated that she killed Alex to ensure that he would not interfere with their relationship when she returned to the medic.
Although Ezra McCandless claimed that she killed Alex Woodsworth in self-defense, the prosecution and the jury didn’t find her story convincing enough. All the evidence pointed towards her ~ starting from the self-inflicted wounds, to trying to lure the police officers away from the scene of the crime so that they do not find Alex Woodworth's dead body.
