Where is Gary Howard Oliva now? Whereabouts of JonBenét Ramsey's murder suspect explored 

Netflix recently added a three-part true crime doc to its library on November 25, 2024, titled Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey. This series delves deep and revisits the 1996 murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a case that remains unsolved to date.

Gary Howard Olivia, a longtime suspect in this case, who is also a convicted pedophile, allegedly confessed to the murder of JonBenét Ramsey. However, there was never enough evidence to link him to this case.

Although Gary Howard Olivia was initially arrested and charged because of possession of child p*rnography, he was released from prison in early 2024 and is currently living in Denver, Colorado.

JonBenét Ramsey was se*ually assaulted and later killed

Reportedly, JonBenét Patricia Ramsey was found dead on December 2, 1996, at her Colorado residence. Her father John Ramsey was the one to discover her body in the basement of the house. The autopsy confirmed that JonBenét Ramsey was se*ually assaulted before she was murdered by strangulation.

Gary Howard Olivia, who is a convicted pedophile, allegedly confessed to killing Ramsey in 1996. However, no DNA evidence linked him to the 6-year-old's murder. Hence he was never tried and convicted for the same.

As per reports by the Daily Mail, Gary Howard Olivia confessed to accidentally killing Ramsey in letters that he had sent to his classmate Michael Vail. Vail also revealed to Touch magazine in 2018 that he had received a call from Gary Howard Olivia post the death of JonBenét Patricia Ramsey, in which he allegedly said, and as Vail recalls:

"He kept moaning, ‘I hurt a little girl. I hurt a little girl.’”

Gary Howard Olivia had a history of violence

Reportedly, Gary Howard Olivia was arrested for the first time in 1990, when he was found guilty of abusing a 7-year-old girl and also threatening the victim's mother. After serving a 17-month sentence, again in December 2000, Gary was arrested for an unrelated drug offense. During this arrest, officers also found a photo of JonBenét Ramsey and a poem titled 'Ode to JonBenét', which struck a chord. However, there was no evidence to link him to the 1996 murder.

In 2016, however, the authorities found several images of se*ual abuse of children, photographs of Ramsey, her autopsy report, and more on his phone, which once again made Gary Howard Olivia, a person of interest in the 1996 murder.

Gary Howard Olivia was sentenced to 10 years for possession of child por*ography in 2016. However, to date, there hasn’t been any evidence to link him to the murder of JonBenét.

He was supposed to be released from prison in late 2025 but was granted parole in 2024 and is a free man now. However, he remains under scrutiny and lives in Denver, Colorado. Reportedly, Gary Howard Olivia also has to seek mental health treatment until 2027.

JonBenét Ramsey's murder remains unsolved even after decades

To date, JonBenét Ramsey has not received justice as no one has been convicted for her murder. Speaking of the same, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey's executive producer Berlinger told Netflix on November 26:

"There is nothing more horrific than an innocent child being murdered. But combine that with the false narrative that she was murdered by her own parents, or her 9-year-old brother, and that’s a horrifying tale.”

Additionally, Berlinger discussed the victim's father, John Bennett Ramsey, and how he has been making a concerted effort to apprehend his daughter's murderer since 1996. With regards to that Berlinger told Netflix:

"Here’s a guy who’s 80 years old now, has been through hell, and yet is still pounding the table after all these decades to solve this case and demanding that the Boulder Police Department do more advanced DNA testing."
