The case is portrayed in many crime documentary productions, podcasts and TV programs. As an example, Snapped on Oxygen revisits the details of this crime and its consequences in the subsequent chapters.
The murder of Kathy Kraynik
As per the details covered in the podcast Women Behind Bars episode 2, on the morning of December 11, 2000, Blake and her then-boyfriend Corey Jackson committed the horrific murder of her mother, Kathy Kraynik. According to Virginia Pilot, the crime was premeditated, with Jennifer telling Jackson the night before that she was planning to kill her mother.
As Jackson wrote in his testimony, Jennifer had even contemplated numerous methods of killing Kraynik, such as beating her with a hammer or drowning her. Jennifer told him about an alleged childhood incident where her mother tried to choke her once.
Jennifer Blake's 7-year-old daughter was reportedly present in the house during the incident and testified to hearing her grandmother cry out, "Jenny, stop!" during the attack. Jackson assisted Blake by physically overpowering Kraynik. He used a sock to asphyxiate her during the struggle, and they confirmed her death by submerging her head in water to check for air bubbles.
Kraynik's body was then dumped in the trash can, but the attempt to burn the body failed due to the spread of smoke into the house. The couple later dumped the body in Northampton County, North Carolina, where it was found two weeks later.
The trial and conviction of Jennifer Blake
According to Virginia Pilot, Jennifer Blake and Corey Jackson were arrested after Kathy Kraynik's body was discovered. In exchange for Corey Jackson's testimony against Blake, he was convicted of pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
Blake was found guilty of first-degree murder during a four-day trial in Chesapeake Circuit Court. Reportedly, the prosecution said Blake was the one who planned the whole crime, while the defense lawyer said Jackson was the instigator. The jury delivered a guilty verdict against Jeter, and she was given a life sentence without parole.
Her trial ended in 2001, in which she was sentenced to life imprisonment.
