Joe Francis created Girls Gone Wild in 1997, and the venture was successful as the site earned more than $20 million in no time. Following this, its founder was arrested in 2003 for racketeering, however, he was soon released on bond.

In 2006, Francis pleaded guilty to three counts of producing s*xually explicit content, for which he was fined $2.1 million and also ordered to do 200 hours of community service.

In 2007, Joe Francis was sent to jail for the 2003 racketeering charges and was released in 2008. In 2011, four women accused him of multiple charges including se*ual exploitation, battery, and more. However, the all-female jury did not grant any money as compensation to the woman who sued him.

In 2011, Joe Francis was arrested again when it was discovered by the authorities that he held three women at his Hollywood home and also assaulted one of them. He was sentenced to 270 days in prison when found guilty of the above crime. In a 2015, civil settlement, Francis agreed to serve 336 days in jail for some previous pending charges of 2003.

Joe Francis opens up in Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story

As per reports by the New York Times, Francis was charged with nearly 70 counts of racketeering, prostitution, and more. However, most of the charges were dropped against him excluding six. Talking about the 2003 incident in Panama City, Francis revealed in an interview with journalist Scaachi Koul for the three-part docuseries that:

"I don't believe they were victimized. I believe they victimized me. 100%. I believe and we all believe that they were put up by the Panama City Police and it was all an operation."

When asked if he feels sorry for the victims of Girls Gone Wild, he said:

"No, because I don't believe they were victimized. They victimized me."

Francis believes that he and his team were set up by the Panama City Police, regarding the 2003 charges. In regards to that, he said:

No, they were 17, just shy of 18. They were the ones that victimized us. I believe, we all believe, that they were put up by the Panama City police, and it was all an operation. So I believe that was quite orchestrated. I walked into a f---ing snake pit, okay?"
